Since Effortless Combat Throws

Tim's Discussion Board: Shen Wu : Since Effortless Combat Throws
By Edward Hines on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 09:35 am: Edit Post

Hi Tim,

it's been 9 years since the publication of ECT, and at least 11 since you put together the concepts the book is based on. Deservedly the book has been recognised as a classic of its kind.

Since that time you have been very actively practising and researching martial arts, as well as how to explain and teach them.

I was wondering the other day how during this time you're understanding has changed and developed.

If you were going to write ECT again knowing what you know now, what would be different? Or would you write something else altogether?

Of course I'm not asking you to write a whole new book on your discussion board (but you could e-mail me privately ;-). I am just curious and eager to learn.

best wishes

Ed

I think Tim needs to do three things.

1) Write a book about Shen Wu philosophy and training.

2) Produce a DVD about Shen Wu training.

3) Produce a DVD about Sun Taiji.

Has everyone read the Brazilian Jujitsu book that Tim co-authored? After discovering that I have been trying to figure out if there are any other Cartmell gems floating around that I don't know about.

I have really enjoyed Tim's works and have realized that it is impossible for every single master to put out every single titbit of information for people to gain knowledge.

My experience is that knowledge has to be revelation of what one sees, understands, incorporates based on their individual experience and training (physiology, training, size, etc).

Viewing everyone's DVD, video, etc is strange for me but apparently there is a market out there. Though I am big and fat, and hairless, training holds more importance than ever as I hope to be fit one day as a lean mean hungry machine.

Choices are great.

Hi Ed,
I still teach the same fundamental principles I described in the book. The major difference is that I believe that with years of training, competing and teaching I have "streamlined" my instruction. My present students seem to improve faster than my earlier students.

I introduce sparring drills much earlier, and I have learned and developed a fairly large number of solo and partner training drills.

Let's have a show-down. Old students VS new students to prove whether or not Tim's teaching methods are more effective now!!!!!

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE CHI!

Hi Tim,

thanks for that. I suspected that there might be some kind of simplification or streamlining. I am curious how that shows up.

This is probably not the medium to explain though :-(

Ed
