Jason,

"A man ia a man, nothing more, if you make him more than what he is - you have lost before you have began"

- Jimmy H. Woo (an example of kung fu philosophy)

Also Jay, "knowing yourself" is the crux of a kung fu education.

"Life is for learning"

- Ananomous

"The power of knowing from the heart is vital to sucess in any endeavor"

- Jack de la Vicentes

Hopp - I know your in here some where, call it intuition.

Finally -

The body and mind are one. What affects one, affects the other. If the mind is always worried about things, then the health of the body is naturally affected. The body will be more susceptible to colds, body aches and minor infections. If the body is unhealthy due to lack of exercise, then the mind will take on a weak and unhealthy attitude also. Both body and mind must be kept healthy. The body through exercise, the mind through correct thinking and actions. You have to develop the right habits in your daily life, and this is done through your kung fu practice. But, if your teacher doesn’t know how to teach the psychology and philosophy of the art, you would not learn right.

For instance, techniques and forms are used to promote mind concentration and body control. That teaches you how to think and act correctly, or properly. That is why I say, "if as soon as you walk out my door you forget all about what you have learned and done here you might as well throw your money in the gutter."

If you come here just to learn how to fight, you’re wasting your time, that’s not what the art is about. But if you listen to what I am telling you, practice correctly, then after many years the body and mind become one; the body works with mind, the mind works with body, whatever I ask the body to do, it will do. In the studio and in life - see?

Thats your San Soo teacher Tim.

Jack,

If your posts werent so convoluted Tim might be able to address your specific "questions" in a fashion that you'd like. Problem is, one has a hard enough time trying to get even a few cogent ideas from your meth-induced posts to respond to. I would say this results mostly from your own inability to understand what exactly you are saying or even want to say. Its just like apprentice has said Jack, you've got me and pretty much everyone with a functioning brain confused. Do us all a favor and practice some simplicity...you know, like Tim does. Write your point in a single paragraph and help everyone understand what exactly you mean to say. I've no trouble understanding Tim.

Seems to me that Tim has an understanding of certain philosophical notions that embody the arts he studies and are reflected in his posts: No extraneous material, emphasis on simplicity and working with whats in front of us to promote THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING. Less is more.

I see no prominent philosophical notions permeating your very being on an internet forum Jack. You mumble platitudes and type a lot of words though, most mispeleded words at that. I'm a very open minded person though so please, how about a response thats mildly intelligible?

Wow,
What a pleasure to read this last chain of posts.

How do you measure one's knowledge of (martial) philosophy?
How is one's (martial) philosophy expressed?
What does learning consist of?
What method of learning/training works best? Top-down, with the emphasis on talk, or bottom up, emphasizing action?

Personally, I feel it's easy for me to get caught up with intellectualizing when I focus excessively on the talk aspect. I believe I learn in a more direct route when my body works. I guess thats why training at Shen Wu was so much fun.

Thank you all for the great posts,

Haran

Haran: This ones for you!

A poem:

I am like the mosquito.

Armed with a numbing sting and wings of deception I affix myself to your body to suckle your life essence from you. So long as I stay no longer than my numbing sting I will be gone before you notice my sting in one area of your body while I attack another. In flight your hand that swats at me only serves to push me further from your sight. It is my nature to stay longer than my numbing sting allowing your nerves to wise up to my presence and those that scratch my itch will suffer the most. In spotting me on your body your swat pushes me against your skin and your strike is now my death blow.

By my will I will become the dragonfly.

O dragonfly dreaded enemy of the mosquito I fear thee not! Vampire of vampires you fly alight four wings of liberation and freedom from the biters and carriers of sleepiness that are mosquitos. Like Pazuzu of the southern Sumerian desert I am become. Like the desert which sucks away the flesh and souls of those fallen, Dragonfly, Pazuzu, feeder of those who have fed for me, I am the wisdom of an action that is no action save that which I am. I rest on flowers and slow when the sunlight hits me not. In darkness I am crippled laying pray to those of darkness. Wings of freedom stay in the light!

More for you Haran:

By my will I will become the desert:

I am the desert baking hot and brilliant with ghosts who ride waves of illusion. Ancient sea bed that gives black blood to the insane. Ghouls, genies and those who lie in wait call me friend. I am host to many creatures of death and my sands are numbered with incalculable grains of sorrow and screams. One day, I the great desert shall die by the roots of the tree of the living and the waters of the sky.

By my will I will become the tree:

Under my branches and shade many a master hath lain. Children and adults alike know me and come to me for protection from the great storms. When the waters of the sky mix with my branches the earth we shall reclaim. Many cultures call me wisdom and I am called many names and the living shall know me by only one!

Here are the questions Jack recriminated Tim for avoiding:

"I am curious, were weapons or kung fu philosophy of interest to you?"

"Do you know kung fu philosophy or weapons?"

"Do you teach them?"

"Have you grown into your paws?"

I'm off to play Texas Hold'em.
