Time to change the subject...
Tim, just got your new book, GREAT JOB! I wasn't expecting it for another 2 weeks, nice surprise!
Happy Training.
Thanks CJS.
Tim:
If you let me say some words...
If we all have 2 legs,2 arms, a trunk and a head then does it matter what you call it?
The important thing is the method of teaching.
JT,
Exactly right.
Jimmy H. Woo method of teaching Choi li ho fut hung kung fu in the San Soo style prepares you to fight in the street.
Most martial arts do not prepare you intellectually/emotionally to injure, mame or kill.
Hell most do not even train you to sport fight.
Some do.
But the choir knows how I feel about that. And all others merely need read my posts.
Method of teaching is important along with purity of technique.
Method preferably incorporates psychology of body and mind. Also philosophical accoutrements.
Jack:
I agree with you but i doubt that a fighter prepared for any contact competition and well rounded will loose a streetfight.
Usually, they also have street experience.
Yours,
Jagdish
Quite an assumption.
The generic term "street fight", in the way you use it (my turn to make an assumption) implies that two people will announce or reveal there intentions to fight.
That may be correct to assume when martial artist or people who like to fight begin a conflict.
However, street fighting in a street fighter's world is not about who is better. It is about getting the job done.
Martial artist just cannot accept that. They view all as a contest. Competition, as in sports.
Street fighters are acting to advance a cause (good or bad, theirs or other's). They are not drunken college kids or martial artists looking to see if there techniques work.
Street fighters are applying their skill to advance an agenda. They are stealth, more like ninjas as compared to UFC contestants.
If I want something done in the real world, to affect a cause, I will not look to a competitive martial artist. I would look to someone who is in the trade: IE military, police or bouncer/bail enforcement experience.
These are people who know what street fighting is about, as they understand that it is much more than technique.
They understand weapons, strategy and advantage.
excuse me i just happened to come along this discussion while in school and have no expierience or anything but Jack V couldnt be more correct. in a street fight you dont know what could happen, you cant be focused on being a better fighter if the other guy pulls out a gun. you have to be smarter then that, always be prepared for anything and always keep an eye on him watching for something sneaky
Smart kid. Humble an honest too. Potential leader? May be. Their might still be hope.
Jack:
Please don't think that i haven't understand you.I have.
However, after reading Tim's post and having witness many discussions about this topic i just wanted to clarify that any combat athlete won't be neccesarily losing a fight in the street. That's it.
I know a streetfight is something totally different and your opponent doesn't understand about rules or winning...Some will try to kill you for the sake of.
One thing i want to add is: is not the same a point fight sparring, a fullcontact match nor a mma fight. A lot people confuse that.
And i will add something i posted earlier"Usually, they also have street experience".
And yes "street fighting in a street fighter's world is not about who is better. It is about getting the job done".
"Martial artist just cannot accept that. They view all as a contest. Competition, as in sports."
You are right but there is one weakness for people who fight for street or defending their lives, etc. No matter you are decent and your opponent a thug you are likely to loose when they sue you.The law is for them.
JT,
you seem like a good kid (if you are under 30 you are a kid to me),
Here is some good advice for you, do not look for trouble, it will find you on its own, and when it does, it is better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6.
Martial arts are not my favorite sport. Actually surfing is cool but it really should not be a sport, similar to kung fu.
I think all fighting is ugly.
I think competition is usually not beneficial.
I think fighting for sports is socially degrading.
I think bodybuilding and high fashion are lame when done to extremes.
As you can see, theses are all my thoughts.
ONLY PERSONAL OPINION.
I think over regulation is a waste of time, money and common sense.
Seat belt law is lame. Helmet law too.
But here is what I find despicable about US culture. That people are so in to following the rules.
Even if the rules are lame.
"Wow, it’s a rule, we better follow it!"
It reminds me of a child saying, "Johnny’s mom lets him do it." or "all the other kids have one"
Does that make it right, that is right for you?
People assume if itlegal it is ethical. Not always.
I taught KFSS for quite a while. I never taught more than 10 students at once. Not because I couldn't. I had more than that watching.
I did it because I customized my teaching to each student.
Like a father customizes his teaching to his children.
I was not teaching them to be me by teaching what I wanted to teach, what interested me.
I taught them what hey needed to learn. So they could have the tools to invent themselves in a way that fit their individual elements of power.
That creates the potential for strong character and confidence.
I taught my students how to play their own game.
When you know yourself, all the TV fashion, marketing, follow the rules because “Johnny's got one” peer pressure becomes seen for what it is - Lame and unimaginative. It is common and boring.
When you discover yourself, you will never have enough time to watch TV. You will be giving yourself all the love, acceptance and approval you need. Thus, you will never need to search for it from others. Instead, you will find that once you have confidence (love acceptance and approval of yourself) you will find others giving theirs to you.
At this point, you will appreciate their offerings, but they will seem rather unimportant. And it’s funny, because when you didn't have it, it seemed so important.
Need love is the most shallow love of them all (See: the 4 loves by CS Lewis) because once you have what you need, your love for it is diminished as you no longer need it.
If you can see fulfilling need as a way out of need, then you are in good shape.
However, most find only a void, a whole to fill with another need. Like an MP3 player, or Daddy's approval or another pair of $300 shoes (the 23rd pair).
It is marketing and consumerism that leads to "need," finding things outside your self that make you feel good - for about a day to an hour.
Then it repeats.
That is why kung fu (not MA) teaches you to build an internal base of power. When you have external power base (money, political power, protection ability) you have the inner strength not to ABUSE it.
That does not mean not use it.
I use mine to Jaaack with oppressors; mental, physical and financial. And I use it hard.
Once you see that "NEED" is lame and self-inflicted, it liberates you to stand up to what is antiquated (no longer makes sense) or just downright wrong. (Beginning an authentic kung fu education is a declaration of the intention to find what works for you, to revise yourself, physically emotionally and intellectually.)
You become courageous. You stand up when no one else does. Confidence (self-love, approval and appreciation) create courage. Courage is a mark of leadership.
And it is leaders who are picked off by the status quo (IE: Lebanon). So do you want to be a leader? Yes. Are leaders assassinated? Yes.
Jacks answer: Be a leader anyways.
But, if you are a well-trained San Soo man, you learn to be a silent director of the opponent’s fate. An unseen leader. Like your Uncle Jack.
Appears to do his thing - and disappears again.
He teaches other the foundation to discover their own character and they go on leading, usually (although in different ways) doing what your ole Uncie Jack is doing but on their terms.
Thus Uncie J has expanded his agenda through others doing what they do on their own.
Ingenious aint it?
That is what master strategists do.
That is what US master strategists do to the US people through marketing. Except for one major difference, like most martial art teachers they create followers, not leaders, and the followers are predictable and keep on believing they need more and keep on buying in search of outside love, appreciation and approval.
You do not need new perfume to be loved, accepted and approved of, unless you buy into the idea of the Balboa Bay Club or whatever social hierarchy you THINK you NEED in order to be accepted.
You are free to create what works for you. Your laws, your rules, your game, your love, acceptance and approval.
Thus endth lesson (and a long one.... whoooh)
Feliz Navida,
Uncie J “Watch out for sharp things” Vincent
Uncie J "Watch out for sharp things" (and people) Vincent, Excellent advice! You make a lot of sense, getting deeper, better meaning with each sobering post you articulate. I think a good MA with the right "mindset" is better off in a fight, than a combat athlete ready for "competition" would be in a fight. Ready for Navidad?
"I think fighting for sports is socially degrading." The only statment Jack you've made worth agreeing with other then that you think to much.
Kung fu San Soo is a thinking mans art. Thanks for the compliment I. B.
I see you continue to follow your Uncie J's posts. Perhaps a closet thinker?
Bread man,
Thanks for the compliment.
I use this venue to practice writing, changing voice and topic.
I try to reveal kung fu culture as a way of life. I do this as a service to repay Jimmy H. Woo for all he taught me.
Tim gets stuck with me because he studied in El Monte. Most of these cooks that read these posts are too far gone to reach. They are brain washed by cars and money and television. They think having a cool car and acting like the latest sports "hero" or musician (where do I puke) amounts to being cool.
Probally not a potential leader in the bunch (quire).
But the unregistered guests seem to get it.
The anti-quire.
The study of KFSS is much more than exercising physical technique.
It is about victory in life. Not just merely winning in compition.
Can you make the world a better place?
Sometimes I can and sometimes I cannot.
That does not stop me from trying my best and (although I am heavily flawed and only continue to exist by grace, the only law of which I live under (God's undeserved favor)my meager attempts to grasp the full consequences of my actions remain unrealized.
You go with what you know in your heart at the moment. That is the best a man can do.
Just being able to "know in your heart" is a blessing.
A lot of the first generation guys did not care for Taoism or Buddhism. I found that it was instrumental to have at least some knowledge so one could understand where Jimmy was coming from. He was a Buddhist almost his entire life.
It was a great gift to have Jimmy's ear after day class and before he left to Santa Anita.
That man loved to live. Look at his smile. Look at his scowel.
Uncie Jack is getting sentimental thinking about Jimmy. AAAhhhhh....
Well it is the time of year to think about loved ones. That means back to the kids and family.
Pan, do you like pozole?
Sr. Vincent, I like pozole, love las nenas almost as much as fighting. But have to live a life of boredom because of "ley" I'm sure you know the feeling.
Hey ladies,
After we make the world a better place and lick all of our past influences butts because we are sentimental about a Holiday that puts money in the big Corporate walets - can we discuss something like fighting.
"know your heart" "make the world a freakin better place" "not just physical exercise..."
Hey Jack "all of a sudden Mother Teresa" I like you better when you a wanking on someone. Now, get back to it.
Remember, There's only ONE Betty, and that's BIG BALD BETTY!!!"
