Tim, great posts!
Bob #2, street fights are more entertaining than "sport" fights.
Dennis K., I think its more like tangerines and oranges.
Hi Jack,
Thank you for thinking that I am really Tim posting.
I take that statement in your post as a very high compliment. I assure you that I am not Tim.
Although I have not studied KFSS, our martial backgrounds might not be to different from each other. I think it's one of the reasons why I've been tremedously successful. There are many very good points that you make.
Thank you for the compliment and thinking that I am a gentleman too. I believe you would be pleasantly surprised that I too would believe "that’s real San Soo – really, teaxt book stuff, smile and hit em caliber." You see, it's a valuable lesson that my martial arts background taught me too.
For the record, I don't live here in Europe. I've been (because I can and choose to) all over the world and it's too bad that people can't be comfortable in their own bag of skin. Pretending to be something that you are not is a sad way to sleep walk through life.
good training,
Joe
Hey, when I use to teach Kung Fu San Soo in Santa Maria Ca, I had a Gracie Jujutsu teacher come to me. He had taught for about 20 years, been in many many match, but never in a real street fight. So, one night he was outside of a bar when someone said something to him. He replied in like manner, and before he knew it, he had been punch out, and was on the ground, then he began getting stomped on. He seized the leg and pull the guy to the ground and held on for dear life. Then the buddies of the guy he grabbed showed up and began punching and kicking him. He was laid up for about a month. So much for tournaments. I remember him telling me, he had no idea how to react in a street fight, and he was only use to squaring off and being prepared to fight, and that is why he came to me, to learn street fighting....
I usually run away when "the other guys buddies" show up.
I took another look at this interesting San Soo thread and had to comment further.
First Jack the guy who is known by Jack is hilarious and has good content. And makes some good point although in a rude way. He sounds like a lot of fun to party with. I don't party much though.
What is the reasoning behind the “San Soo way of doing things?
I think that deserves an ansewr and Jack's point is valid, nobody is talking about San Soo on this web page, just why they do not practice it.
Maybe there wouold be some San Soo talk here if you would please ansewer this.
Have you taken so much guff(merely my assumption) from the San Soo community that you cannot put up the history and explanation of an art in respect of a man you claim to love?
I do not see any San Soo history, only a picture. I think that confirms my theory which is I think San Soo is not taught because you have have taken to much crap for straying from the fold.
Good for you Tim. I like what you say about the Choy li ho fut hung part. I diviated too and was called a heritic by Bernie etc.
But I have not let that influence a truly valuable tool and the building of confidence and charcter in my students. Nor have I taken such a general opinion egarding most San Soo students.
You have a long association of martial arts and books to your credit. I think it takes confidence and character to ask you the tough questions regarding your San Soo knowledge and lack of transfering it. I assume it is extensive so why not teach it or incorporate it into Shenwu.
Do you incorporate San Soo into Shen Wu?
Please keep your knowledge alive by teaching it and continue your search in the martial arts wherever it may lead you.
Old Timer,
I remeber Jimmy talking about how bringing up the traditional Taoist and Buddhist names for stances and hand position only made the students think it was :Mickey mouse." He wanted to get away from the esoteric stuff to attract more business, Just as he called it kung fu Karate in he early days to attact more business. If Jimmy wwas in the middle of his teaching caerer today with all the popularity of the Asian culture, I think we would have heard more about his philosophy.
One last thing. There was a good point made about Jimmy representing his culture versus preaching about Taoism and Buddism. Yu had to read those kind of books to later understand where he was coming from. It wasn't easy to decipher Jimmy's code. Other more social behavior and his opinion about what to do in social situations was very blunt.
I noticed that he spoke more of this in day class versus night class.
I guess having 75 peopl on the floor at once did not allow for too much talk in night class.
Did you go days or nights?
All who ehndured the realism od El Monte are linked as family - even if they differ about things.
Tim - And when you say cooperative i think you give the picture of an art that was easy to perform. When Jimmy walked out of the studio, it became not so cooperative. There was some punishment dished out if you know what I mean.
Anyways I find this site and this topic to be very interesting.
Good Luck San Soo brother, even if you do not teach it
James - Run if you can but if you are down I sugest you crawl away as soon as possible. That maybe longer then you might like.
Mastermind your kidding right Gracie JJ teacher for 20 years got bet down like that may be his drunk or your drunk
Something for you Tim,
To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.

When Alexander the Great visited Diogenes and asked whether he could do
anything for the famed teacher, Diogenes replied: 'Only stand out of my
light.' Perhaps some day we shall know how to heighten creativity. Until
then, one of the best things we can do for creative men and women is to
stand out of their light.
~John W. Gardner
Datuibad,
It depends on the day. Ther are days and there are days. I taught him for almost a year. He lived in Santa Barbra. I won't name names but I could.
You see when you take the varibles out of the equation and use the ready set fight mentality, you have a much more predictible set of circunstances. That is the difference between sport and combat - Mon Ha Woo called it homoginization. The ring is sterile. There are no outside variables. This vastly reduces the anything can happen senario which is the main theme of life.
Joe - Sacred cows make great hamburger.
sometimes, you just have to take a beating.
it's hard to believe teacher for 20 yr in BJJ get bet down like that i think he was drunk or mastermind put something in his drinks
the special bus keeps picking up passengers.
Roger that, must be a bench on every corner... This post creeps me out!

Since I'm not the dwiver.. allow me to show my powers of instigation over you dweebs:
Hey robert, why don't you post something making fun of the post about the Gracie Jui Jitsu teacher going to a San Soo guy to learn how to fight. And besure to use "ALL CAPS" to make it appear even more agrivating.
Bob#2

that was the gayest, dumbest, most unbelievable story i have ever heard, lie or no lie, true or not, it was just a very idiotic post. dont ask me why, i am in the process of figuring it out myself.
why dont i just front my ass off like some martial arts grandmaster? HEY GUYS! I TEACH SAN SHOU! WHEN I WAS TEACHING BACK IN THE LATE 70'S, A FLOWER CHILD CAME TO ME, HE SAY" HEY, I KICK YOUR ASS" SO I SAY "YEAH RYE" SO I KICK HIS ASS AND HE SAY TO ME " YOU'RE GOOD!" AND I SAY "YES!" "I TEACH YOU STREETFIGHTING!" YOU THING SO???
p.s. you're not the first person to pull a fake asian accent, but i do give you credit for actually trying, so now you have 3 more dumbass points on your namecard.
Yeah! You tell'im little r.
Does anybody have the link to the video of KFSS vs. Mixed Martial Arts guys fighting where the KFSS guy gets his arm popped?

There have been a lot of inteligent and witty post by San Soo men and little are no substance from the students and teacher on this site regarding San Soo.
Kunf fu San Soo is about as much for your lame little tournaments as asprins are for heart attacks.
Sure your go to the ground and "tap out when it hurts" mentality is a as good as a band aid in a street fight after the other guys has slit your thoat with his knife. Tapping out is not going to save you. I doubt if any of you medal kissers and trophy lovers with no street confidence have ever been in a street fight. That doesn't count when the high school football player stuck you in the trash can head first.
Go back to playing your games and your silly posts to make you feel better. See how much it helps you when its really all on the line.
You guys have a lot of confidence... in your keyboard.
Your teacher won't even ansewer questions on the subject of San Soo, so you all follow the leader and critize what you know nothing about. I think he got his ass kicked too many times in El Monte and hates the guys who did it cause he never got over it. Thats why he doesn't teach it. He loved Jimmy (suck up) but hates his students. Any ways compitition is much safer than street fighting.
Guys come on this board and make a lot of good points and you got nothing constructive to say, even if it is critisism and your humor is about eigth grade level. Stick to your rules and referees. You will never be in a street fight so you do not need San Soo, you don't have the balls.
You guys hide behind your technique but on the street you are the emporers with no clothes. Why the discussion board on San Soo? Only to dis it? Why don't you spen some time doing something constructive like sucking up to your teacher.
Why don't you discus it and talk about worthwhile things like whatever happened to Jimmy's ancient books that he taught from.
All you San Soo guys know who I am.
