Sometimes martial artists also know how to set broken bones, realign dislocated joints, mix herbal combinations that speed up the healing of internal bruises, how to/when to massage injuries, tui na massage, etc. Anybody know if Cartmell was taught any of these skills by his masters? Does he teach these skills?
John,
I only know how to bust people up. Someone else has to heal them.
Tim healed my martial arts stupidity, and he healed it good.
Tim started the healing process for me in my attitudes to the Sun-style!
Seriously though, in North America, those who wrap themselves in the Kung FuŠ tv show mentality for business purposes often make a big deal over titles like "Dr." when their degrees (if they exist) are in philosophy, technical sciences or alternative medicine.
Perhaps legally they have the right to us such a title but it doesn't have much relevance to whatever fighting and/or training skills they can transmit.
It's more common among China-born martial arts teachers to find those with real skill and/or training in bone-setting, acupressure, acupuncture, herbs, etc. and I have known a few. Oh, and sometimes these were better healers than fighters and sometimes the reverse.
barefoot doctors.
country boys that Mao insisted get basic medical training, like EMTs+Nursing. They were all trained in the 50's-60's and some of them are still around. Now medicine is more capitalistic, so there's not much place for them anymore.
