The physics of five. The number five is reoccuring in both Toaist and Bhuddhist beliefs. In the western world think Da Vinci sketch of man in a circle inside a square. Five limbs. Ok. Five mind or senses. Ok. For me the physics of five as applied to combat is thus:
Broken down to its most basic truth, fighting is two bodies colliding. My space is entering your space. As it concerns the human body ( Duh! ) lets look at human body as it is about to collide with something else. THis applies to everything from a punch or a grab to being hit by another car and turned into dashboard guacamole.
Their is long (AH-soo) and extended making contact at the periphery of your circle. As these bodies are moving at each other the elbows fold ( Futga ) Here is a moment in which you can go angular and low to avoid direct collision (Numpi) . As the bodies continue into collision the arms pass each other into a grab (Or oppurtunity to grab). Tsoi-Li-Ho is understanding how to turn the missed punch, which folded and missed with the elbow into a grab or body blast. Taup Gau is like wiping the sweat of your brow 'cus you have refined your movements of all excess motion. Thus the five concept as I see it is about the physics of closing the distance AND LEAVING YOUR OPTIONS open to go seemlessy inside one of the five into another. This can only be accomplished through the use of circular movement.
Hay, this is just my opinion- I could be Wrong!

no lines are completely straight!
and to move straight(like a jab)
the hip goes in rotation,so is the arm(spiral)
the elbow move in half circle motion.
even your fifth limb is not straight,
i'm talking about sexual orientation here!

Well spoken Mr. Dahoust! I use the example of a coin to demonstrate that (the circle). I hold it up with the face towards the person and say " Is a circle a circle or (tilting coin on it edge, holding it at their eye level) a straight line?

Back on subject:
In my opinion their are five aspects of collision (As stated above). Their is favourable collision and non-favourable collision (I.E You get your ass kicked). If there are five aspect of collision and two types of collision, surely there must be five aspects of a good collision and five aspects of a bad collision. In knowing one you know the other. When I speak to other martial artists I ask them how long they have been an instructor. If they are respond with anything to the affect of "I have not followed any one style to its end (Black Belt etc...) I make a mental note that they PROBABLY have weakness in one of five areas. The feet (not stepping right and if you aint steppin right it wont work-includes being flat footed, not pivoting etc...). The torso-under or over rotation and not keeping the back straight. The head-not keeping your eyes properly focused(The less of the opponent you see the more off balance you are), not keeping the chin in etc.... The arms and hands- stopping motion or moving only one side, realising that a block IS A BLOW and if that blow misses it becomes a cover. The last- improper mental attitude and/or holding the breathe.
OK Im fininshed with my usual B.S. (For now!!!!!)

*yaWn* bob are on drugs too?
or are you talking out of your ass again?
jack,i have not followed anyone style to it's end,
i learn all and everything i can(or think is good for me).
is there ever an end?
you probably have weakness your self.
if not,how come you haven't answer my prayers?
that's the beauty of art(martial or else)
it doesn't matter how good was the last painting,
new canvas,new painting!
it's not what you learned in the past that counts
it's what you do in the moment(fight or else).

what the hell are you guy doing at night?
no ones writes !

Absolutely I have many areas to work on. I am student before I am an instructor- I worded that incorrectly. I simply meant to say if you try to chase two rabbits you will not catch any of them. And again Mr. Dahoust you are correct. Part of what keeps MA young beyond their years is that we are involved in an art that has no end and in partaking, in that sense, we never stop growing or learning. No one writes because I am boring the hell out of everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with my B.S. :-) oooppps more yellow dots. I have a going problem-I mean a growing problem, I should see a doctor!
