Senior V, you were missed! Glad you are back! Could the five families be correlated to the five elements. Numpi=air, futga=fire,TLH=water etc.... or is this mixing apples with oranges, or Bhuddha and the Tao?

As I alluded to before, all five parts of Choi li ho fut hung are not families in the sense that they are not representing actual "families" of fighters and their techniques.

Three refer to families, two are training modes.

Sometimes they are mistakenly called families as implied by relationship.

As orange and apple juice mix well, so does Taoism and Buddhism. I refer to them as philosophies and not religion, as there is no formal worship involved in their original intent. Later they were misused as religion. Here is some CLHFHKFSS history regarding Taoism and Buddhism:

The Taoists as early as the 5th century BC practiced various forms of martial exercises and techniques. They too mixed sign language and dance movements into their martial routines. This was done both for combat reasons and as a way to communicating with others. To this day, movements in kung fu forms tell stories to those who have knowledge of these gestures.

The Taoist community also developed harmonizing motions aimed at unifying the upper and lower body actions in a coordinated manner (know as hop ga). These movements were arrived at through the study and observations of the natural way the human skeletal and muscular anatomy functioned.

Observations of facial features as well as emotional and mental reactions to various exercises were noted. These were then developed in numerous ways to help promote a healthy body and mind. Later all these techniques would be mingled with many of the Buddhist exercise's and evolve into what is know today as fighting forms. These forms were the forerunners of the modern day Buddhist fighting technique.

During the Han dynasty (202-220 AD), as Buddhism began to take a foot hold in China, Taoism and Buddhism began to intermingle and used each other for there own mutual advantage. This mutual relationship was born out of the belief that, the founder of Taoism had been reborn in India as the Buddha. Some of the first Buddhist translations into Chinese utilized Taoist language and dealt with exercises, breath control, concentration and warrior postures.

The book of five rings has some interesting corelation with CLHFHKFSS.

One more thing. Don't let anybody BS yu that forms are not important. Only people that do not know them will dismiss them as nonessential. Form is an expression of all that is inside manifesting itself outside.

Forms are am important part of tradition and traditionis what maintains kung fu cultuer. Also, meditation is very important and dismissed as non-sense by the UFC zealots.

In saying forms are you refering to the two mans sets(The books?). Its the funniest things. Pull out a notebook with movements written down in it and it seems everyone laughs at you, an instructor that needs a notebook! How much fun it is to see those smiles leave their faces followed by a W.T.F was that, where is a peice of paper I gotta write that one down! We live in the dyad, the world of two. In order to become formless we must understand form. In order to lead you must follow etc....
Mr. Daoust, How do you propose to carry on a tradition into posterity with out "Forms" of some kind?

Senior V. A question.
Master Cartmell has provided us with a tremendous tool in having this board. There is a wealth of imformation on preparedness. However I was wondering if their is a post or place you could refer Grasshopper for after-the-fact information. Dealing with emotions after you had to flip the switch type of stuff. Not meaning to get caried away here.

I tend to look at it as my basic "life is for learning" mind set. Did I become emotional, did I make inappropriate body decisions, that is did my mind engage or was I natural. If I remember what movements I used than I was unnatural.

Was I judicious in response without mental consciousness or did my body issue the appropriate response, absent of mind.

To violate nature is the definition of violence.

In another post, Tim used the example of three men stomping on one man. If the one man being stomped by the three deserved to be stomped by them, I do not see this as violence. In Guatemala recently a man who stole a child and tried to sell her was killed by a lynch mob of more than 200 people. I do not call that violent, I see it as natural justice.

But violence to one may not be violence to another.
People will always have their own views about certain things, but the way we act on them is something totally different. If someone where to rape my sis, then yea, I'd beat the living crap outta them. It's called being a big brother.
