I like working a heavy bag. I used it extensively in training students. It has the weight of an opponent. If you don't secure the bottom but leg it swing it is good for working on timing too. It is also excellent for endurance conditioning if you work it for uninterrupted, extended periods. In my classes everyone was required to work up to a point where they could work a heavy bag strongly for fifteen straight minutes. This meant they had to be in constant motion, kicking, kneeing, punching, using elbows, etc. It is also excellent for conditioning the mid-section, like a medicine ball only heavier. Swing it away as far as you can and allow it to swing back into your mid-section unobstructed. The lightest bag we used for these was 80 pounds.

I like the Gold's Gym Senior Speedball, a Speedball on a spring stand which moves all over and fast too!!! Improves hand-eye co-ordination and builds upper body strength, aerobic condition and endurance, and response times can be improved using this equipment. You can even use em to evade/dodge/cover when it fly's back toward your face, great training, good workout!

i'm all about muay thai style pad work.

it's the best way to tighten up so many facets of striking, like timing, placement, combos and power.
If you don't strike them correctly there is instant feedback, and for the pad man there is instant feedback as far as force issued by the striker.

I use a heavy bag thats lowered so that the bottom is about 18 inches or so from the ground. Forces you to get low so that your techniques are from the opps sternum down to their knee. Can use your knees to dig in to bag while punching and blocking etc.... Great for gettin down!

I prefer the Thai style bag. Mine is only 40lbs. but thats all I could afford right now. I like this bag because it goes all the to the ground(an inch or two above the ground). I use the bag to practice leg kicks, knees, and I will wrap one of my legs around the bag as if I am wrapping my leg around an opponents leg... etc. as I bear hug the bag, and bite it, and pinch and rip at it. I must admit... the taste of canvas is gnasty.
