A Hung ga (Hero Family) concept of movement and mind.
In Hung ga one of the ways the relationship between one person and another in a training or fight situation was compared
to that of the bridge. Imagine yourself standing an arms distance from someone and putting your arm out touch them. This
motion if viewed in a silhoutte style from the side resembles a bridge. The bodies are the supporting pillars and the arm is the
bridge which allows for two way traffic. This traffic can be expressed physically or mentally.
Physically, in movement, this bridge is the only means of communicating or reaching out to an opponent. It matters not if it
is a punch, push, pull, kick or grab. It is only through direct confrontation that anything can be done. Even if one were to
duckunder the bridge it is only to confront the opponent in a different way. Many books, schools, masters and chatrooms
(Like this one which I dare say is THE BEST!) exist for the exploration of physical movement.
One of the manners that is not always discussed in great detail is the mental bridge, of which we shall explore here. Just as
in the physical bridge the mental bridge too is a way of two way traffic. This traffic is subtil and not always easily understood or
comprehended.
An aspect of this subtil bridge can be explained thusly. Everytime you find your self in a social situation like a party or
otherwise and act in a certain manner that, for good or bad, leaves an impression on people this action lays a foundation stone
in the mind of the percievers. This is much more than a type of conditioning. It is a subtil bridge in which you, the creator are
the owner. The perciever, of course, will always believe they are in control of this thought of you and your actions. So long as
you are conscious of your act this statement holds true.
As in the example above of a party or social situation that you attend and create these mental bridges, the perciever of your
actions will walk away with thoughts such as that guys an , a cokehead, nicest guy on earth etc... This false
perception of you allows you, the creator, to elicit control over them. After all you the creator ARE what the percievers are
percieving. This creates an underestimation of what you really ARE. An underestimation is the same as surprise attack. When
the times comes to make your move, be it ask for the money in commision based sales or wring the neck of a town bully, you
have increased your odds greatly.
In Japan the Samurai have a saying: "The unseen sword cuts.". Learning the art of forming mental bridges that allow you to
control your space is the same as this unseen sword. It is also stated that a master attacks through deception. The greatest
device for deception ever to abide on earth is the mind of man.
The development of any skill requires time. It is through a constant application of time and effort that everything reveals
itself to you. The ancient alchemist developed an art that broke the universe down into its prime constituents, things or
operations that everything took part in or of. The Toaist alchemist did the same and concealed their secret in the name kung
fu. Kung meaning energy and fu meaning way or time. Every living thing in this world utilizes these two concepts. It can be
used for good or bad and consideration on the part of the weilder about the future events of the action should always be
considered.
