While Tim might possess all those great attributes that are unique within the marital arts community - one thing is for sure, he can't remember squat when it comes to avocado dip...

Remember, there's only one big hairy chick!!!

The whole Big Hairy Chick image is going to fester in my mind for to long of a time.

Mark,

There are many similarites in BJJ/Judo takedowns and Shuai Jiao takedowns. Give people a uniform and let them wrestle long enough and they'll come up with the same basic things that work.

I use a number of throws and takedowns I originally learned in the Chinese martial arts when I wrestle.

Is there any difference between this book and the translation of the same book done by Marcus Brinkman, such as commentary by you or something? Thanks.

-Steve

Greetings,
Your translation of "chinese wrestling" is truly fantastic. I also love "effortless combat throws". Please continue your wonderful work.

Many Blessings

Tim, your translation of Tong Zhongyis wrestling book is now on sale here in Taiwan and in kind of an odd place. I was over at the Caves Bookstore (the one on Chung Shan North Road, not the Tienmu one) this morning and just before leaving I thought I would walk over to their tiny sports section. When I did I was pleasantly surprised to see two new copies of your book sitting there. It is a surprise because Caves usually does not have any martial arts stuff and if they do it tends to be Bruce Lee stuff only.

If I remember right, somebody said they had seen it at Page One (which is kind of the upscale foreigner bookstore out by City Hall). I do know that Page One stocks your co-authored book on passing the guard and (I think) I have seen your translation of Sun Lu Tangs taiji book at Page One too.

In any event, that really is a well done book. I am sure Tong Zhongyi, up in Chinese wrestlers heaven, is real happy with your translation and the nice layout that NAB did on the book.

Take care,
Brian
p.s. for once, Taiwan is (slightly) more comfortable in the summer than California is. I see in the paper you guys are getting killed with the heat. Here in Taiwan we got a typhoon coming in tomorrow and so the temp is down a bit.

Looking through Tongs wrestling book reminded me of something that I had wondered about. In the rules section (page 227), Tong mentions that it is against the rules to use the right leg to kick the opponents right leg or use the left leg to kick the opponents left leg.

What is the reason for that rule? Safety? Some obscure Mongolian cultural thing? From my brief time in judo I do not remember there being a similar rule in judo.

Take care,
Brian

there are no such rules in judo for sure!

ko uchi and o uchi gari are the foundation for a lot of guys meat and potatoes strategy, sort of the jab of their jab/cross world.

they are done on either leg regardless, sort of which ever one is there, or the one that unbalances the opponent most.

I wonder if in shui jiao there is an orthodox stance (ie left or right handed) that one must take, that would standardize the legs, and hence make the rule possible?

Hi Brian,

My book is in Caves? very cool. I spent a lot of time in there back in the day.

It's hot here. I hear you have had more Typhoons than usual this season.

I don't know about the not attacking the opposite leg rule, I don't remember hearing it anyplace else. Maybe someone else knows tha particulars.

In reference to Brian Kennedys post on kicking the opps. leg with your same leg (left to left etc...)

a. if you miss you are crossed, your left leg is crossing your right leg and being crossed in this way is not favorable.

b. you give the opponent your back if you miss.

c. in La verdadera Destreza, according to Euclids first proposition, when applied to the standard segno from the 1500's, the movement of crossing a limb across your body requires twice as much space and time as opposed to "shortcutting" with a right foot foward and right hand lead. While it is true more power is generated in crossing the body, to lead with a cross often gets you "crucified".

d. purposeful misleading.....sometimes truths were revealed in appearing to be lies at first glance. This disuades the casual student from the truth but seekers of truth will try everything so that the truth may be revealed to them.......in this example however that is probably not the case.

Hope this helps Brian!

Master Cartmell:
Is your translation a word to word or were you translating motions from drawings or paintings in addition to the word to word?

By Tim on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 06:53 pm: Edit Post

Word for word translation.

I try to keep my own interpretations out of the translations I do, my "job" is to present the ideas of the original author as accurately as I can.

I bought Mr. Kennedy's book on training manuals based on your comments here on the board, Tim.

Without getting into a lot of detail, I already own your Passing the Guard book and loved it. Would you recommend this as my next Cartmellian purchase?

Effortless Combat Throws.

and let me know what you think of it, because I inadvertantly purchased 'Effortless Combat Boots', in which Mr. Cartmell is not credited.

Oh yeah, the companion video was starring Ron Jeremy. Right?
Think I will still with the combat "throws" for now.
Thanks for the suggestion and the schtick.

Master Cartmell:
How many books have you authored? Whats coming next?

Mr Kennedy:
I reread the archive for this thread and found no mention of the book you authored as mentioned in Ahdoga's post above. As a student interested in ancient texts could you please refer me the title of your work?

By Bob #2 on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 - 11:43 am: Edit Post

no, Ahdoga, you're thinking of "Effortless Combat Hos"
