So did Sun jianyun have definition for internal power?

Tim's Discussion Board: Shen Wu : So did Sun jianyun have definition for internal power?

Dear Tim,
I read in the pakua chang journal that interviewed you and you said you had read all the books by Sun Lu Tang and specifically went to the suns to learn their bagua and taiji........
Did Sun Jianyun actually defined or gave a definition of what is "internal" and what is "internal power" (Nei jing)...... and does any of the sun lutang books define or mention specific training methods for developing neigong?

The translation of sun's xingyi book appears so esoteric and difficult to understand the chinese medicine and qi theories.....
Do you have a working definition of what is neigong and nei jing?

Thanks.

Andy,

First off, Sun Lutang wrote in an "esoteric" manner on purpose, he was trying to legitimize the martial arts as sophisticated methods of self cultivation and health development, up until his time martial arts practice was viewed as low class, training for soldiers and thugs.

Sun's time was one of change, in the era of modern weapons, there was no longer a need for traditional martial arts training in and of itself. Sun was the very rare combination of literate scholar and martial artist, so he took it upon himself to combine philosophical and "medical" knowledge with martial forms.

In the time I spent training with Sun Jianyun, Sun Baoan and their students I never once heard them mention the word "qi" or "dantian."

They used the word "jing" like anyone else talking about athletic, trained force. Power is generated through correct movement, use of weight and proper timing. I never heard them mention "nei jing." Others' experience could be different.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the info.

Maybe I should be even more suspicious when I read about claims of secret sun this and that.....

Curious, did Sun Baoan learn from Sun Cunzhou or Sun Jianyun or both?

Thanks

Its exactly as I understand it.The power comes from good body mechanics coupled with intention and relaxation.A lot of emphasis is put on training the lumber spine with pressups. This area has to be strong to release force.
