Double overhooks

Tim's Discussion Board: Shen Wu : Double overhooks

Reading Mike Swain's Clinch book, in the forward Jose Farguas mentions that the double overhook is a superior position in regards to clinch fighting. Now I am not an expert at anything, but everything I have been told/taught is contrary to this statement.
Thoughts?
Thanks
Jake

It is a superior position...if you know how to use it. 1-it takes away the bodylock. In order for the bodylock to work, you must grip high or low, but not in the middle. The double overhook forces the grip to the middle. No leverage advantage. 2- the double overhook allows you to control your opponent's balance...if you are deep and almost chest to chest. The goal is to control both shoulders, not just his arms. 3-once you have his balance, you can do anything you want with him, sweep, reap, trip or "backarch" (my favorite)!!! But your hips have to be lower than his.

Common mistake is not controling both shoulders with deep and tight overhooks.

Oh, most common tactic is to immediately go perpendicular with my double overhooks. As if I'm going for a hip throw, this immediately gets him off balance and ready to be thrown.

Good points Archer. I guess I just feel (being taller than the average joe) awkward with double over's as if I do not have enough control. But I am a noobie so I have many more years to get better at the game.
