Tim's Discussion Board: Ba Gua Zhang : Black Sash

You're probably getting tired of addressing this questions. However, here goes.

Are you still associated as an advisor with the TV show Black Sash on WB. Do you also choreograph the fight and training scenes?

If not, can you tell me who does? I think it's great that Baguazhang is being showcased in a more public forum. Although I know "hollywood" may change a great deal and not represent the style genuinely.

How faithful to Gao style are the training and fighting?

Dennis

Hi Dennis,
No, I only worked on the pilot episode.

The production is in Vancouver now, I don't know who is doing the coreography.

The circle forms in the pilot were Gao style, the forms and techniques in the rest of the shows won't be.

Now at least we won't have freakin martial arts get in the way of some T & A...

Thanks Mr. Cartmell. I'm sorry to hear you won't be involved. I was really excited the show was featuring Baguazhang, but if it isn't genuine, then it loses some of it's benefit.

If you find out who is doing the choreography, I'd love to know. I have to admit, the stuff they did on the second episode seemed very weak.

Thanks,
Dennis

I have heard rumours that Sam Masich will be doing some of the fight choreography for Black Sash once it starts filming in Vancouver as he is based out of that area in Canada. His pa-kua skills come, in part, from Liang Shou-yu, and Sam has considerable experience in tv/movie work.

Of course, having people of his calibre and Tim's involved in the production doesn't gaurantee that their martial excellence will survive the editor's scissors. The bimbos in lycra will probably take precedence over good pa-kua techniques ...

"The bimbos in lycra will probably take precedence over good pa-kua techniques ..."

As well they should (if your priorities are in order); but of course, bimbos in lycra performing good pa-kua techniques would be best. :-)

i just watched it again...

that throw looked like it hurt, have you been able to heal up from that?

there must be something you can do to get the show back on the air...

you could offer to take over the lead role... I'll run your school for you...

just think of the kids... looking up to you, following your example, watching your every move with their dewey teenage eyes and lycra sports bra uniform...

I really liked the way Russel Wong (? the teacher) would say a few words, tell the class to practice and then moesey out the door for a couple cups of coffee.

what a teacher

americans just suck at making action martial arts series, besides marshal law with samo hung. there is a need for better choreographers and not to mention the lack of skill in these actors, although i rather liked xena...
i wonder where i can find that "pilot" episode, sounds interesting, i am a master of mock fu, learning martial arts from movies.
