Contact info and lineage holders

Tim's Discussion Board: Ba Gua Zhang : Contact info and lineage holders
By Frank R. Matz on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 - 02:12 pm: Edit Post

Hello,

My name is Rick Matz. I am studying BGZ in Michigan. I have just joined the board.

I have a friend in Colorado who would like to contact Markus Brinkman, to look into training with him. Could someone please provide me with the contact information?

Also - Gao Yi Sheng named three lineage holders: Zhang Jun Feng, Ho Ho Choy, and Wu ??? Xia. All three are dead - who did they in turn name as lineage holders?

Best Regards,

Rick Matz

Who were named as lineage holders? It depends who you ask.
It is important to remember that people who are designated as "lineage holders" weren't necessarily the best practitioners or fighters in their respective styles. Often times titles and certificates saying person x is an "indoor student" or "lineage holder" are given for political reasons or to increase the prestige of the teacher.
For example, the famous Nine Palace Ba Gua Zhang teacher Liu Xing Han (of Beijing) offered me a certificate stating I was an "indoor student," after I had trained with him a total of 6 days. Why? Because it added to his prestige to have "indoor students" from foreign countries. He had given many such certificates to students from around the world that only studied with him a short time. I declined. I am, however, a "lineage holder" in the Gao Style of Ba Gua Zhang under Luo De Xiu. That one I earned.
A note to students looking for a teacher: Although there are many types of rankings which are hard earned and well deserved, still it would be prudent to choose a teacher based upon actual ability and willingness to teach, and not on awarded titles.

Dear Tim,

I currently live in Beijing and would be very interested in studying the Gao style BGZ. There should be disciples of Liu Feng Cai or Zhang Jun Feng in Tianjin ( Liu Shu Hang or Wang Shu Sheng) and or maybe in Beijing??? Could you please tell me more about that and if by chance there are people practicing Gao style, could you give me there contact info.

Thanks a lot

Michel

Hi Michel,

I don't know of any Gao style practitioners in Beijing. I know there are still Gao stylists in Tianjin, but I don't have any contact information.

Maybe someone else reading this can give you more specific info.

You may wanna try contacting the North American Tang Shou Tao Association. Their Gao style comes through the Tianjin lineage.

Here's the site: www.natsta.org
