Thank you for that, I read the article. I am very interested in luo shu, I ching, and its relation to martial arts and life in general.

That article, especially the bit about the turtle, really hurt my brain.

But not as much as this:

When he is up for the seminar this weekend I am going to try to convince Tim to write an article on Attacking the Turtle Position in BJJ based on the numerology of the Luo Turtle/Luo Shu Diagram....its theory is deep and abstruse.

A series of DVDs will hopefully follow...

And don't forget to sell the magic gi with the luosho diagram printed on the back.

"Attacking the Turtle Position in BJJ based on the numerology of the Luo Turtle/Luo Shu Diagram"

Wait, no one has written that article yet?

Robert

Yes, but is he using ba gua bu fa when so doing?

I think its funny that you guys are so disrespectful, without the luoshu diagram you wouldnt have your precious internal martial arts.

You think just because you can use the arts in combat you can forget where they come from.

Cocky attitude if you ask me.

If you want to put a limit on what you learn, thats fine with me..

speaking of being cocky. I had to go in for a check up last week and the nurse taking my weight was hot, with a low cut top.
as I watched her, as she watched the scale- an additional 6 lbs slowly appeared.

Slowly? You losing your touch?

By Tim on Monday, April 16, 2012 - 12:31 am: Edit Post

Actually, the Luo Shu diagram originally had nothing to do with any martial art.

I knew you were gonna say that Tim...

What about the 5 elements? The bagua diagram, etc.

I know the ba gua diagram has roots in the luo shu diagram.

They are just branches of a tree, but they all have the same root right?

Without the luoshu, there would be no bagua, maybe there would be the 5 elements..

right or wrong?

Retrofitting martial arts with philosophy.

By Tim on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 - 07:57 pm: Edit Post

Andy is exactly right.

The founder of Baguazhang didn't read the Yi Jing (would have been especially difficult since he was illiterate) and then jump up and start walking the circle.

In his own time, what we know as "Baguazhang" wasn't so named, that name came later (the customary retrofitting of new stuff with old names).

That didn't tally with conservation of mass Bob#2. Did you grab on to something that was not yourself ?

By robert on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 - 01:21 am: Edit Post

I beg to differ Andy, but I do appreciate your comment.

I know that "martial arts" have existed since the first man picked up a tree branch to defend himself from a wild animal, or another human.

But,

Ancient chinese philosophy has been around for quite some time too.

Tim, you say that Baguazhang was not named baguazhang, what was it called?

You say it originally had nothing to do with any martial art, while that is a vague answer, im not saying it isnt true,

An even better question is, why?

Why were these arts retrofitted in such a way?

And is it really justifiable to make fun of it?

By Craig on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 - 02:31 am: Edit Post

I believe that Dong's martial art was named "Zhuan Zhang" before it was re-titled Baguazhang. A lot of, if not all, Chinese martial arts have Chinese philosophical concepts and mystical figures attributed to their developments and content in one way or another, after their creation. It was certainly culturally cooler to have deep philosophy attached to a martial art than to just call it "Ass whooping fist" or "Bitch Slap Palm".
