Tim's Discussion Board: Tai Ji Quan : The Essential Movements of Tai Chi by John Kotsias

Hello Tim and Everyone,

I wanted to get some feedback on this book. I have some experience in Yang style, which seems to be the authors background as well, and I definitely thought it was a good book to help with the basics of body control and chi development that too many people ignore. I am interested in learning Sun style, so I was also curious what Tim's opinion is on whether these essential movements are all as accurate for Sun style as they are for Yang.

Thanks,
Richard

Richard,
the book is excellent. the movements are a chi gung set from the "Secret" Yang form. they are called the 8 Essential Movements and are performed as warm up to the form or as a separate exercise. they were taught by Hou Chi Kwang, a student of Yang Shao Hou. they contain elements of the form and can be used as a basis for applications. i believe they can be used in conjunction with any other style.
