Calming Timid Tai Chi Students

Tim's Discussion Board: Tai Ji Quan : Calming Timid Tai Chi Students

Tim,

Last week had an incident while teaching a Tai Chi combat class. A newer student got angry when he missed the mat by several feet. (by the way, thanks for suggesting using a mat. All the students fight over it. Athletic mats are expensive so I bought a 6x4 strip of egg carton foam instead). So this guy got opportunity to help me demonstrate FaJink to the class. And he had this real "attitude" about it and he kept keeping his balance while I was doing a brush-knee twist step and when I finally threw him he landed flat on his back on the pavement and hit his head or something. Then he started yelling and when he stood up I Inadvertently delivered a powerful burst of Chi into his jaw knocking him out cold. All my years of training taught me that when someone is screaming obscenities at you they may attack and harm you.

The other students started screaming when the guy started floundering around, eyes rolled back, tongue sticking out wheezing. I had to do some yelling to get them to pair off and practice push hands.

How do you usually calm down your students when they start screaming?

Valium & duct tape

The staff at the retirement center threatened legal action if I continue to duct tape the students. And I'm not going to waste any valium I get my hands on. These codgers have the numbing effects of old age to their advantage. (hmmmm the staff didn't mention super-glue!).

I've gotta class to teach,

5{ thought of myself as the Master of the Deadly Art of Bad Humour; but I see that I must make the pilgrimidge to bow at the feet of Grandmaster Bob #2. Or is there a correspondence school advertised on matchbook covers that I can graduate from?

here we go with the "feet" thing again. Looks like I'll be going back to therapy soon.

If you don't know what you've just done. Do a search for my posts with "feet" in the text and learn why you are now on the "never to be helped" list.

All this time I thought I was the only one who had timid student problems. However, Bob#2 has not yet surpassed me in this lowly field of endeavor.

Dear Bob #2;
Who would have known that I could "de-feet" your witty sallies by simply taking a "sole-full" stroll down memory lane in the Shenwu archives.
