A couple of months back I started doing the Gracie Combatives program offered at one of the Gracie schools here in San Diego. The teacher is a guy named Matt Becker and I have really enjoyed the program and his teaching. As part of that I have been looking around at some of the early film footage of the Gracie school. One of the things I found, and I don’t think it has been posted here before, is this old Gracie short film from the 1950s that is basically an advert for their system.

It is kind of interesting in a number of ways. It mentions how Gracie jiujitsu is good self defense, good exercise---but it also mentions how Gracie jiujitsu is good therapy for insecurity and low self esteem (let me add, I do not know how accurate the subtitles are since I do not understand Portuguese).

It was interesting to see some of the demos. At 3:18 into the film Carlos Gracie hits at flying armbar! Although in a sense it looks like he and his student are kind of hamming it up for the film.

The other thing that amused me was at 6:26 into the film---it shows how learning Gracie jiujitsu can help you score chicks and keep the chicks you already have. If some Vale Tudo meathead whistles at your hot girlfriend—but because you don’t know Gracie jiujitsu you are too weak to do anything—the solution to that (as the film shows) is to run down to your nearest certified Gracie Combatives school and sign up. Then you can take care of business and get your old lady back.
