Hi,
Nothing that I could do would smell worse than his "wind palm". Drive a man to drink (antifreeze), I tell ya'.
Anyhoo, as Meynard pointed out; I DON'T know what I'm talking about(I'm new to the grappling game), so both the illumination on the definition of "pummelling" as well as the ideas are appreciated.
As for later in the skirmish when we were on the ground, I tried to get him in my guard (I think that's what it's called when you are on your back and your legs are wrapped around his waist or torso.) but had a rough time because of his girth. I'm curious if anyone has any tips on this matter as well. I did what I could as far as getting my legs around and hooking my heels into his back/kidney area and that worked well enough with the choke that I had on him. Thanks,
Josh
Very well, I apologize for wrongly using the word "pummeling" as it is used by 99% of the english-speaking population.
waaahhh, waaahhh ... don't cry about it little kenny. It's okay to feel dumb.
Yes.
Josh,
What you have to do is take a few basic wrestling or grappling classes. Any ninth grade wrestler will know the basics of "pommeling" to defend against being picked up like a rag doll.
Tim,
Are you back from Thailand? When will you start the grappling classes again?
Meynard,
Why are you so confrontational? I look forward to tapping you out again!
I'm in Bangkok. I'll be back in class on Monday January 19.
Thanks for the vote of confidence (I think?),
I had years previously asked this very question of my good friend Demetrey Furman, who was a national freestyle wrestling champ in Canada, and came in 6th in the Pan AM games. He is also, fwiw, the guy who got me into systema, and as pure a martial artist as you can find.
I asked him the same question, and he said, let's try it. I was about 200 lb. back then. He was 160 and 4 inches shorter. He did the exact "tech" I described, and called it a cross-face. It does require some sensitivity.
He's showed me pummeling too, but to me it's obvious that if a man wants to fight at the top, it makes sense to go for the bottom.
I also know a bearhug takedown, in which your hands apply pressure to his rear hips, and you drive your chin into a pp around the upper center of his pec (also a balance point). If his hips are loose or his hips are back he can escape, but as with all things, it's a tradeoff in relative skill sets.
So Tim,
Have you beaten any professional Thai boxers in numerous brutal challenge matches?
Blakeism, I stand in awe of and bow to your grandmastery in the art of trolling. You truly have "kung fu". BTW, I think you and Maciej are one and the same.
Just having fun with Kenneth Sohl.
Please come on down and tap me out whoever you are. I'm waiting for you.
Meynard, I'll roll with you if you ever get healthy enough.
That'll be the day. Everyone knows I'm never healthy enough. I roll anyway.
Hey Tim,what do you think of sifu Vunak's kina mutai?Do you think it is effective for when a streetfight hits the ground?
I've never seen kina mutai.
Hi,
I once rolled with this really big sherriff's deputy. I gained the mount and once in the mount I came to the horrible realizatiom that my knees were about six inches off the ground at which point he rolled me and squished me.
I'm 5'5'' and about 170 and he was at least 260 and about 5'10'' this is when it was truly driven home that size matters alot.
Andrew
PS Anyone else run into this problem?
If you mount an opponent who is too fat for you to touch the ground with your knees, one solution is to sit to one side with one knee on the ground with the other knee squeezing into his ribs.
You can also ride low, with your feet hooked up behind the opponent's rear with strong hip and chest pressure.
Hey Tim, i was wondering,do you think size plays a bigger role in grappling than the stand-up game?Do you think the heaver a person is, the more chance they have?
Well, it always depends on the individual's level of skill as well.
I think, in general, size will play a bigger part in stand up striking than ground grappling.
The bigger/stronger someone is, all things being equal, the better chance they will have of winning.
weight difference just seems to amplify what's going on. IF you are getting knee on belly, it's bad no matter what. But it's progressively worse with every pound the guy adds on you.
If you have a fat guy mounted, you don't really notice his weight that much.
Keep mounting those fat boys and your gonna get AIDS.
LOL
As a matter of interest, what is your fighting weight Tim?
160 lbs.
