Congrats to Tim for ANOTHER win at a today's Copa event in Costa Mesa, California.

Tim and his opponent faced off in a black-belt super match. (During super matches other mats are cleared and the entire gymnasium grows silent as hundreds of spectators and fellow BJJ fighters watch the big dogs go at it.)

Tim's opponent was a Judo player for 20 years and has had an incredible record in BJJ, last year he took Gold in the Brazillian World games in two divisions (a Brown belt at the time) placing him at the top of the top. Both fighters calmly countered each others attempts to throw until 1/2 through the 10minute bout when Tim pulled his opponent in to his guard. Tim spent rest of the match trying to choke and sweep his opponent who had a solid defense and seemed unwilling to try anything beyond defending Tim's attacks. Tim won by decision.

[An impressive side-note for those keeping score- last year, Tim, as a brown-belt, defeated Rommel at the PanAm BJJ games (Rommel said he'd "walked through" the US National Championships a few months earlier)- and Tim has now defeated last year's 1st place winner of the BJJ games in Brazil. Not too shabby for a guy who still thinks 'Ice Ice Baby' is a great song.]

Several of Tim's classmates and students also fared well. Chris Hein defeated 3 opponents before losing to a 4th on points- taking 3rd place in his division.

The Copa is hosted by Cleber Luciano who has done a tremendous job organizing the event. The action continues on Sunday with blue, brown and more black belt fights. For more information go to:

Did anyone get choked unconcious? Or get dropped on their head?

Were there any good BJJ chick fights???

Thanks everyone,
I'd also like to congratulate Chris Hein (who won two of his matches with beautiful submissions) and Donovan MacLeod for their excellent performances. They've proved they are ready to move up to the next level.

Congrats to Tim. It was a technical fight all the way and at the end it was proven that Tim was the better technician.

The fight was 10 minutes long. The first 5 minutes was spent in classic stand up chess match. Tim was constantly on the attack and his opponent put up an excellent defense. In the last 5 minutes Tim went to the guard where he continued to press the attack through several sweep and submissions attempts. His opponent remained defensive and seemed content at just surviving the match.

Please note that his opponent was a gold medalist in two divisions in the Mundials (Jiu Jitsu World Championship held in Rio de Janeiro) last year. In fighting Tim the best he could do was defend himself.

It was a great fight.

Chris Hein also did a great job in his division. He reached the semi-finals fighting against a judo and jiu jitsu player.

Yes Bob#2, as a matter of fact I saw one guy being revieved by the ref after being choked out.

another fighter was able to get to his feet while being arm-barred and droped his opponent on his head (leading to his own disqualification).

There were lots of 'chick fights'. Those women are tough.... and hot!

Yeah Tom!! Sorry I didn't make it to compete. I was busy at Yoga...trying to find a better way to lick my own p*ssy...

Who's Tom?

Who got disqualified, the person in the arm bar, or the person who got dropped on his head.

seems to make more sense to disqualify someone for getting dropped on their head than the other way round.

But what do I know?

except to say congratulations Tim, and Chris

Thanks Ed,

In sport BJJ competition, it is illegal to pick up your opponent when he is on his back and slam him on the mat. It was an allowed counter technique to submissions from the guard in old Kodokan Judo, but was declared illegal in Judo competition in the 1920's.

When standing, it is allowed to pick the opponent up as high as you want and slam him to the mat with a throw.

T-I-M. Sorry for the fast and sloppy fingers. In other venues they are considered a real gift.

Good job TIM.

See you Friday.

About Tim's match, his opponent was scared stiff. His opponent did not attempt one single offensive manuever. All he did was defend, defend, and defend! I think he was scared because last year, he got punked by Tim. Oh yeah, in case anybody forgot, they fought last year as brown belts. Tim slammed him to the mat, mounted, and submitted him with a classic picture perfect Americana arm lock (as pictured in Grappling Magazine). I personally think that Tim's opponent was going for a "moral" victory by not losing to a submission.
