I'm sure Andy has a side of the story as well. I know him a bit and he was nice.

Sean, If this was you who posted this, and I kind of suspect it was, let me give you some advice. Admittedly this advice is probably too late, but I will give it anyway.

"Divorces", be they marriage divorces or business divorces are best handled privately through mediators. Note the two key words: privatelyˇXmeaning not by posting smears all over cyberspace and mediatorsˇXmeaning not directly between the involved parties but via trusted adult third parties.

Once the problem goes public the "face" issue kicks in and the chances of a rational mediated settlement drop to near zero.

I have no idea what the business arrangements were between you and Andy and I do not want to know or get involved in it. One of the reasons I quit the active practice of law was because I got tired of dealing with angry, unhappy, confrontational people all day every day.

But if by chance you read this before you have spread your cyber-campaign out to every forum on the internetˇXthink about my advice. And I take up space on Tim's board discussing a private matter because it perhaps has some general value for others who are having disagreements with their martial arts teachers, fellow students or business partners or whatever.

Take care,
Brian

Tim, if one was more concerned with "combatives" than competition, should he opt for BJJ or Judo?

I just found an online listing for a Chet Blalock, who advertises BJJ, MT and MMA training near me. Anyone know anything about him?

Kenneth,
It's hard to say, it would depend on the teacher.

hybrid vigour is an apropos term that can denote the 'best' of two groups.

Tim, in retrospect, I guess it was rather a stupid question on my part, I should just go observe both classes. Stan, point taken, if both schools have something to offer, I shall follow your advice.

Remember a lot depends on how you define "combatives." There are plenty of expert BJJ, Judo, MT, MMA practitioners who don't know and couldn't teach lesson one on combatives, but are quite good at what they do.

If by combatives you mean personal and professional self protection - street oriented applications, each of the above disciplines can have many useful things - but you have to put it together with different goals in mind.

Thanks, Tactical Grappler. I guess I should have phrased the original question in terms of the traits unique to each art. However, since I must choose between the schools available to me, theoretical advantages of one over the other are meaningless, what counts is which of the 2 schools are better for my purposes.

Also, what you say is very true. In the past, I've endured what I consider worthless training just to get to do things I felt I needed. One is ultimately responsible for his own training.

Kenneth, I'm not sure if you've checked out Blalock's yet. If you are interested in effective Combat training for the ring or the street, even just for fitness. There is no better choice anywhere near Chattanooga, TN than Blalock IMB. The instructor, Chet Blalock is a world-class kickboxer and trainer. He is a 6th degree black belt in Joe Lewis Fighting Systems under The Great Joe Lewis he is also a fully certified Muay Thai instructor. Aside from his kickboxing credentials he holds a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Allan Goes. Every technique is down to the smallest detail, and the workout you will recieve in training is amazing.

Feel free to stop by sometime for a class to see how you like it. Monday is Jiu-Jitsu from 6:30-8:00 and kickboxing from 8:00-9:30, Tuesday is all kickboxing, wednesday is Jiu-Jitsu from 6:30-8:00 and Boxing from 8:00 'til 9:30, Thursday is mostly Jiu-Jitsu 6:30 to 9:30, Friday is open gym 6:00-7:30 (Everyone usually just grapples), and Saturday is open gym 4:30 'til about 6:30 (On Saturday everyone tends to spar kickboxing or MMA though)

We we also be having Allan Goes for a seminar soon

Jason, is that you Russia??? But yes, he is right, IMB is the best place I have trained yet in the whole Chattown area. Everyone is welcome, but if you don't like to train hard and stick with it, you'll end up just as many before, WASHOUT! :-)
Peace
