Tim's Discussion Board: Jiu Jitsu/Grappling/Ground Fighting : Best way to begin BJJ: Archive through April 24, 2004
By Brian Kennedy on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 10:10 pm: Edit Post

I recently started taking lessons with Andy Wang who runs, along with Sean McCormack the Taipei BJJ Academy. I have not done any type of grappling since high school (which was 29 years ago).

What is the most important things I should keep in mind in the beginning to get a solid beginning?

I should mention that Andy and Sean have a great club (fairly new, just got going a couple of months ago) with great students. Some of you may know Andy Wang as he is from L.A.

Take care,
Brian

Hi Brian,

You can't practice the basics too much. And when you start rolling, you'll find that cardio is king!

Please give my regards to Andy.

Andy is a good guy. I met him at the RAW Gym in El Segundo where he gave as good as he got. Andy can give you all the guidance you need. Please tell him I said hello.

What does that mean?-He gave as good as he got. Is he a good grappler? Can he teach?

That means he is scrappy and equal to most grapplers that trained at RAW, but not better. He gave as good as he got.

You mean he is just as good as Mark Eccard or Ricco Chiparelli.

I never saw him train with Ricco, but I doubt Andy could do anything against him. Eccard came after Andy left for Taiwan and to my knowledge they never went against each other. I saw Andy train with Karo Parisian (sp?), Kengo ?, Mac Danzig and other mid-level fighters, but not with Trigg or Matzushenko. He was good and seemed very nice. It goes without saying that he kicked the sheit out of me.

I wonder if he could beat Glen from ShenWu.

Tim and Willard,
I passed along you two's "hellos" to Andy and he sends his best back to you two. He and the rest of the folks at the Taipei BJJ Academy are running around full speed getting everything prepared for their first BJJ tournament which will be sponsored by the Taipei BJJ Academy in mid May. It is shaping up well and they hope to have competitors from all around Asia. But it takes a ton of work, million little things to tend to.

Okay then,
Take care,
Brian

Andy yeah he posted on jareks site looking for TCMA guys from taiwan to compete against. He got one response from some old guy who had not done kung fu for like 15 years or somthing. said he would come if he was paid some money. An epic fight then some OAP guy who has not trained for years who is getting paid wether he wins or loses the match against a BJJ guy. Wonder who will win huh. Going to go to my nearest jujitsu class tonight and ruff up some white belts on there way out of class. Then I can brag same as you BJJ guys about how invincible my technique is.

You'd get choked out by white belts qui chu ji. I dare you to go ruff up some white belts. I dare you. PUNK! Do you feel lucky, do you? PUNK!?

No one can beat Glen. He's a red-headed Jew. For all you statistics guys, that makes Glen 20% stronger per pound than any other man on Earth. Except Groundskeeper Willy...Glen's maternal grandmother. Out!

By Meynard on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 12:30 pm: Edit Post

I thought Groundskeeper Willy is Chris Foote. I'm confused.

Will,
If I become a jew will I see an imediate increase in my strength, or do I have to wait till pass over?

Are red headed jews stronger than other hair colored jews. Because, I can convert to judism but I don't want to dye my hair red.

I don't think being a red haired jew has anything to do with strength. Glen is just a freak of nature.

You're just scared of the circumcision!
