Buchecha repping Ace!

Can I win a bjj match if I avoided takedowns/ground submissions and just kept throwing the other guy?
You could theoretically, except after a couple throws your opponent would pull guard (grab you and sit down), you would then be forced to ground fight as it is illegal in BJJ to back away from the fight.
Assuming of course you could throw the cat to begin with!
What Tim described makes sense. I never see people back up in a bjj match. They just fall into each other which I think is dangerous. I need to wrestle with more bjj people. If that rule wasn't in play I don't think takedowns would happen that often. Bjj peeps don't seem to be known for their takedowns.
A dangerous assumption. Many, if not most, of the Brazilian BJJ black belts are also ranked in Judo. The Gracie family has a HEAVY emphasis on self defense based takedowns. The Machado's have cross trained in Sambo. Rolls Gracie was renown for his stand up. Cat named Megaton Dias is a world class Judoka. Dude named Tim Cartmell uses more CMA based techniques. Roger Gracie's takedowns are awesome. I am redundant....
One thing to keep in mind with competitors is that they are CHOOSING to pull guard. May not be pretty. May not be your idea of high scoring good fun, but they are imposing their will. They INTEND to play a certain angle / strategy and they execute it!
If you just want to work stand up throws, play Judo.
