A question about the grappling class

Tim's Discussion Board: Jiu Jitsu/Grappling/Ground Fighting : A question about the grappling class

Hi Tim, I have some questions about your classes, in particular the grappling class:

1. Can I just take the grappling class without taking the Shen Wu class? As much as I'd like to take the Shen Wu class, work schedule and distance from your school makes it difficult for me to make it to both, so I can probably only make it to the grappling class. What will I be missing if I do this?

2. How do you structure your grappling classes? I read the short description of your Shen Wu class on one of the other threads, so have some idea of that, but not so much on the grappling classes. Do you run it like a regular BJJ class? Or do you incorporate some of your IMA material into the grappling? If so, what kind of things are they (that's different from a regular BJJ class experience) and how are they
incorporated?

3. DO you teach takedowns and throws in the grappling classes, or do you teach them in Shen Wu and reserve the focus of the grappling classes specifically for groundfighting? If so, are the BJJ type takedowns/throws or do you incorporate throws and materials from your other IMAs?

Thanks!

KKM,

I'll leave most question 2 for Tim. But to answer your Questions.....

1. you can attend any and all classes taught at Shen Wu. There is no obligation to attend specific classes. You will still obtain alot of technique but you will miss the Striking/sparring taught during the MMA classes.

3. Takedowns and throws are taught during the BJJ classes. Most throws from Judo and wrestling takedowns. He does often work in other IMA and chinese styles that are very effective in the gi.

To add to B rad's response, classes start with warm ups and conditioning exercises (specific to grappling), then techniques and drills (starting with stand up throws and takedowns, then ground techniques) then about 30 to 40 minutes of sparring.
