A note of gratitude to my teachers

Tim's Discussion Board: Jiu Jitsu/Grappling/Ground Fighting : A note of gratitude to my teachers
By Jake Burroughs on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 12:17 am: Edit Post

Just wanted to give props to my teachers Tim Cartmell and Hu Xi Lin for teaching me the finer points of grappling. I took 1st place today in Mens Shuai Chiao at the Desert Dragon 2007 in Albuquerque, NM.
It was not a huge division, and we were all new to the sport aspect of it, but we had a blast. It showed me I need to continue to work on my technique as I relied too much on my power and strength, as my throws were quite ugly. But I was not thrown once so I guess my stubborn ass has learned a thing or two! Two people are responsible for what I know to this day and those are Tim and Hu Laoshi, two of the best grapplers I have ever had the privilege(?) to train under. I am proud to be your student!

Thank you much,
Jake

Thanks Tim, and Kit!

Kit, your Judo skills are far better than my SC ones. You will school me!
My teacher (Hu Xi Lin) has only taught me "street" oriented techniques, I know very little with gi. Though I seem to do allright.
At the BJJ club I train I can handle most pretty well, but then again Brian (my coach) does not focus much on stand up stuff. I have been rolling at Alberto Crane's gym while I have been here in NM, and overall I have found the same thing, I can throw them pretty easy (except for a couple of the more experienced blokes). And they start standing up all the time.
Cheers
Jake

Congrats!

Well deserved, I'm sure.

Jake - we won't know that 'til we have a go! All in the spirit of good training, of course. Frankly I've never gotten anything past 3d place in any competition I've done!

I've kind of experienced the same thing with BJJ.

Remember just because you "start standing" doesn't necessarily mean you've developed your standing skills.

And just because you "do some groundwork" doesn't mean you are any good at it, either. I've had that experience with a martial artist or two as well.

Kit
True dat! I am looking forward to seeing you again and playing. I had a lot of fun last time you were in town.
Thanks for your continued support brother.
Jake
