More great old footage, this time, a Sumo exhibition match from 1895.
Both fighters are listed as "Yokozuna," so the best of the time; notice how they are child size compared to the pros today.

Thanks!
I've been studying a lot of sumo videos lately. I've learned a lot. There is so much technique there that goes unnoticed.
Why didnt the guy who kicked his two legs up in the air and subsequently won get thrown by his opponent ?
I think it was more of an exhibition match for the newfangled camera than a real bout. My guess is there was some planning ahead how it would end.
Hey Backarcher, have you seen this site?

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly what I've been looking for. It's very difficult to find sumo technique resources.
Thanks!
very cool!
awesome footage tim!
very different then the sumo you see today.
i remember reading about origins of judo/jiujitsu and sumo were connected somehow...
probably geographically.
Great stuff!

Would have been better if they were naked!!
LOL I was going to send the same clip!

Great clip.
They are small compared to the guys today. Does anyone know when they started to pack on the pounds? Was it after WWII?
good training,
Joe

i suspect it has something to do with potatoes, the introduction of which tripled the population of China during the early Qing.
I doubt potatoes were to blame. You never see a fat Leprechan.
But, I wonder if Adam Smith's has ever seen one.
