Etiquette when rolling/sparring

Tim's Discussion Board: Jiu Jitsu/Grappling/Ground Fighting : Etiquette when rolling/sparring

Howdy Tim, I was wondering about Shenwu's etiquette when rolling/sparring. I and a guy I train with have had guys who will use their head to crush our faces, use the hands to cover our mouth and nose and even using their fingers to our eyes. Do you guys go balls to the wall when training? or are we just complaining too much? I am a believer that we need to respect our training partners and look up for each other safety, no partner no progress. Cheers

In my academy, no one will crush your face with their head or cover your mouth or gouge your eyes. Even when my guys roll harder, but they will always use Jiu Jitsu.

The important thing to remember when rolling or during any type of sparring is the goal is not necessarily to "win," the goal is to improve.

That is crazy, William!

I believe you will always be able to do those "dirty" things without a lot of practice.

Why not focus on holding a dominate position and passing the guard?

Tim is right. Schools like that are full of guys who don't want to lose or look bad. They wonder why they never get any better.

eggzactly,

the goal is to improve.

when i used to wrestle, if you missed a single or double, and the person sprawls, expect a knee to come right at your face.

Apart from the fingers to the eyes which is dangerousa lot of that stuff is just annoying you are never going to tap to it . Head squeezes and push chokes I would put into the same category.

my favourite is the guy who tries to elbow the inside of your thigh thinking that's gonna break your guard.

i have guys come into the club all the time from Japanese Jiu Jitsu, or KRav Maga or something...

It always takes them a few sessions to stop trying to choke you when you mount them.
