Tim,
What is your preferred method of passing a good scissors guard?
Rock pass, duh;)
Yeah, but what if they switch to a paper guard??
It depends on the situation and what the opponent does in reaction to my pass.
I usually start by reaching between the opponent's upper legs with my rear hand and hooking my hand over his bottom thigh. You need to also control his bottom arm with your other hand so he can't move his upper body away.
You sprawl back and drive the weight of your upper body into the opponent's hips, shuffle your feet so your body moves around the front of the opponent toward his head as you simultaneously pull his rear leg back.
The opponent may try to scissor his top leg high to stop the pass, which gives you a chance to slide your rear knee between his legs and mount, or hook your top leg over his top leg and pass to his rear.
There are several more options to pass. We have a half dozen or so scissor passes in Passing the Guard. And while I'm on the subject, my partner Ed Beneville and I are currently redoing the entire Passing the Guard book. It should be available in the fall or early winter.
I have your book! And love it.
Thanks!
I also have it, and also love it!
I think I love mine a little too often.
