2009 BJJ World Championships

Tim's Discussion Board: Jiu Jitsu/Grappling/Ground Fighting : 2009 BJJ World Championships

I just got back from watching the 2009 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships.

Although there were a lot of great fights, and the big name fighters did not disappoint, I have to say Roger Gracie was the standout competitor of the event.

Roger won both the Super-Heavy and Absolute divisions, with beautiful technique, simple and clean Jiu Jitsu.

Watch for the DVD (and maybe some of the fights on the net).

9 matches, 9 wins by Xchoke from the mount?! was that true? I know he won both finals that way. Reminds me of Kron doing the same thing.

Pure Water stuff.

Congrats again to Edmund for stepping up in his first Mundials!

Roger is killing fools! Amazing. I wish I was 1/8 as good! Someday....

That's it, 9 chokes from the mount (he did change it up and finish one with an Ezekial Choke, for varieties sake I guess).

Roger manages to beat the best grapplers in the world with the same techniques beginners learn in their first two weeks of training. Unbelievable.

Edmund did a great job. Look for him to finish strong next year, he still needs some time to grow into his weight division.

Brian always says they are called the "basics" because they work! I guess Roger is the living embodiment of that philosophy.
Who's kid is Roger?

Roger's mom is the Gracie. She's a daughter of Carlos Gracie.

His dad is Gomes.
