Throwing dummy Q. for Tim

Tim's Discussion Board: Jiu Jitsu/Grappling/Ground Fighting : Throwing dummy Q. for Tim

Hi Tim,

I just wanted to ask your opinion on using a throwing dummy, as I recently have to take short breaks from the mat due to work.

Do you feel that they are a good way to develop/keep up throwing skills if you have to be off the mat for a while?

Live partners are alway my first choice, but do you feel that a throwing dummy (the stuffed kind) can help build skill? What would you say are the potentially negative side effects?

Thanks,
Craig

Craig,

I think using a throwing dummy is an excellent method of training your basic mechanics, especially when a partner isn't available, or for the more damaging throws. Throwing the dummy can also be used for cardio training as well.

The downside is dummy training doesn't allow for development of live entries or any sensitivity to the opponent's movements and reactions.

Thanks for the feedback, Tim.

I've found a web-site for some dummies.

http://www.combatsports.com/Dummies/products/1008/

I was considering either the 70lb or the 90lb one with the separated arms and legs. In this case, does heavier equal a better workout and throwing mechanic development? Have you heard anything about the quality of these particular dummies? Or can you recommend a good quality one?

I ask as I've heard that some can tear at the seams with a lot of use.

I hope the link is ok, I'll remove it if there's discussion board policy against it.

Cheers,
Craig

I bought one of the 150#ers and it holds up well. I will warn you though... it is dead weight! I overshot with mine, even though I weigh 200#+, 150# was too big.

These are the best for your buck. Others run $500+!!
