I understand the need for the grip fight, but man it makes Judo really herky jerky. Not much "ju" about it.

Nice find, thanks for posting.

That has become the strategy of the sport. Attack first and constantly until you've won. Competitors do their best to get their preferred grip while preventing their opponent from doing the same. Also, refs will penalize you for stalling if you aren't attacking every few seconds. I like it b/c I've got such a short attention span and it builds cardio. Downside is, they have all but eliminated groud work.

I really hate the judo slap fighting for grips. I often chose to just let guys get the grip they want and play from there. Whatever happens, happens but at least I get to play judo.

I understand the rules and the need, just kinda bores me to death sometimes!
Judo has shot itself in the foot in regards to groundwork. Now they have disallowed single and double legs! Ridiculous!

yeah, i agree. i've got no more taste for judo competition, but doesn't mean I can't practice those techniques in the dojo.

Certainly, and don't get me wrong I love Judo. Just some of the grip fighting gets boring to watch!

The mallakhamb used to be a staple of Indian wrestling training.

Too bad it fell out of use. Maybe because it's hard on the crotch.

They both suck.

Sorry that grip fighting bothers you so much Jake. Brian and I did a little grip fighting while we were practicing groundwork. I guess old habits die hard. I'll make sure to tell you to look away if we ever do any more grip fighting so as not to bore you. ;-)

it looks pretty hard on the crotch alright , but I think maybe if that guy relocated to vegas he could find a whole new audience for his skills who may not have the same crotch issue
