Mental factor- other kind of Internal?

Tim's Discussion Board: Concepts : Mental factor- other kind of Internal?

It seems to me that there are some obvious arias of discussion in the martial arts, things like Technique, conditioning, ground fighting skills,ect.. But something i don't see discussed too often is the mental factor. It seems to me that this may be one of the biggest hurdels in fighting. How can I stay alert and relaxed in a fight, how can I keep from getting "tunnel vision" How can i train my natural reaction not to be to curly up in a ball, and let some one kick me to death. How far can I expand my sensitivity? Could mifuni and Rickson, be that much more technically experienced, or is it something else? I was just wondering what drills, and practices some of you might have stumbled upon in these arias, and what thoughts you might have on it.
thanx

Chris.

Great question. Some natural responses can actually make things worse. Better training actually enhances other of our natural responses instead of trying to replace them with something contrived. Check out the works of Massad Ayoob and Payton Quinn. Good quality scenario training goes a long way towards what you are looking for.

Tony Blauer has a forum on mma.tv that is completely dedicated to discussion of this issue.
