Hey Tim,
I was curious, and this is a little off the subject, But. What is your position on weight training?
Just curious as to how you personally place it, or if you do at all? I have seen pictures of old Shao lin, and internal guys doing some training that either included weight training, or some type of static weight holding, or weight manuvering, I guess you might say. Just curious as to whether or not you used it yourself, or suggestions you might give to one of your own students if they were using weights. Thanks in advance :)

I've written about weight training in length on the board before, but here is a summary of what I think. Is it good or bad to lift weights? It depends what you mean by weight training. As I've said before, the same teachers that told me weight training was counterproductive had me working out with very heavy weapons. The difference? If you follow the correct principles of body use then why is lifting weights any different (as far as strength development) than lifting weapons. I've heard the silly "lifting weights will hinder the flow of Qi" argument. How much weight? Does that mean these practitioners won't help carry in the groceries for fear of messing up their qi? We lift 'weight' all the time, it's only a matter of degree.

Personally, I don't lift weights. Although I have no objections to weight training, I feel that the kinds of conditioning I do (bodyweight exercises, isometrics ...) are more productive for what I do (martial arts).

If you practice martial arts, especially those that emphasize flexibility and sensitivity, I would recommend not lifting extremely heavy weights, and to be sure to balance the lifting with enough flexibility work to avoid loss of range of motion.

When my mother reads this I'll have to
start helping with the groceries again.

Darn it all!

I think that lifting weights and building muscle strength is as important as doing ch'i kung. Too much of either one is counter productive, but the fact is that most people aren't going to even be able to bulk up to the point of it being a hindrance.

"When weight training you can train to failure or not, I personally don't advocate training to failure because recovery takes longer and it leaves you feeling stiff."

Ok, this is true... but it also rips more muscle fibres which you are trying to do anyway... the more you rip the stronger you will be when you recover! Also... i always lift till failure on my last set of each exercise (3rd set)... and often find the next time i lift it takes longer to reach failure... and tend not to ache after lifting till failure a few times.

Just thought i'd add that :-D
