What's the secret behind the sucker punch or the key to a sucker punch knocking your opponent down or possibly out. I sucker punched a guy recently with a straight right to the jaw, but all it did was to phase him a bit and he just mnoved back and was talking shet already (ready to fight). So what's the secret behind effective sucker punches?

The element of surprise, and enough power to do damage.

Use a roll of pennies in your hand when you punch. Punch em between the eyes or the throat.

the better secret is not letting someone in range to deliver it

Invite them for a drink first and as they are tossing it back, palm strike the bottom of the glass!

Some good suggestions.

During the argument, wait for him to get distracted and turn his head giving you a perfect shot at his chin.

The roll of change works great also. once you hit him and change flys everywhere yell "KEEP THE CHANGE BITCH!"

Randall,
Thats a gnasty trick... I saw it done one night and man there was teeth and lip pieces everywhere.

My friend that was with me was in Marines at the time and said that was something they were told to watch out for.

Learn how to punch.

I always thought the best sucker punch was a hook to the temple. The temple is an easier place to hit than the jaw and there is little chance of injuring your hand. A solid, unexpected hook to the temple leaves your opponent little chance of remaining concious. But the disadvantage of a hook is that you have to be close to him than with a straight punch.

I forgot to mention a plier hand strike to the throat. Pretty nasty. Want to hit your opponent in the throat but the tucked chin prevents a punch (or even a fore-knuckle punch) from connecting? The plier hand can slide up from the collar bone, under the tucked chin and has little chance of not hitting the throat squarely.

Mont,

I like you so don't get me wrong (I'm not singling you out): A punch to the jaw or nose is fine and damaging enough. Hitting someone full force in the temple or chopping their throat is a little extreme. Just my 2 cents.

One of the guys I trained with got into an argument in the street with some guy which he couldn't get out of. Eventually, he said "OK, look, if you really want to fight, I will... just wait until that cop goes away." As the other guy turned his head to look over his shoulder to look at the fictitious policeman, he hit him in the jaw, knocking him out. This was before he trained in san soo.
Of course, he was a kickboxer, black belt in tae kwon do, good at jujitsu, an amateur boxing coach, 220lbs, worked in construction, and in his youth before he settled down, averaged one fight every two weeks (he generally won). So it wasn't all luck

Find a sucker to punch!

A friend of mine who had never done any martial arts at all gave a guy seizures from one hit to the temple while some friends tried to hold him (my friend) back. At least he didn't start the fight. Needless to say, the cops were called (this was at a party) and the other guy left in an ambulance still having seizures and drifting in and out of conciousness. My friend was a baseball pitcher so I'm guessing he did have quite a bit of hand speed.

P.S. Thanks Willard,
At least someone on the message board doesn't hate me. (I think Tim kinda likes me too but its difficult to tell :-)) Also, if you think the hook to the temple or the chop to the throat is too severe, I hadn't even got to using elbows, hitting the eyes, ripping off the ears and such. Always fun :-) "Holy ! He ripped my ear off, run for your lives!"

Willard has also been known to hump guys while grappling.

So when he says he likes you...it means something else.

Meynard is correct. In the fine Jewish tradition of my kin I have a hole cut in my Gi pants for intense sessions on the mat.

FYI if one deprives another person of a body part he is guilty of "mayhem." This crime counts as a strike in addition to the unprovoked assault. If you steal his Rolex after you knock him out you can get another strike: Three Strikes You're Out.

People with seizures can be fun. Once, while checking on someone in a hospital (he was in a diabetic coma), I noticed that if I pinched his airhose for a while, the monitor beeps would escalate, he would start making little high-pitched noises in the back of his throat while his feet jerked a little, and the nurse would come running. LOL!

you're an a hole!

Willard

Slightly earlier back the term mayhem was even more specific, it was the removal of a body part used for fighting. Those were defined as, hand, foot or front tooth.

Of course I know that removing a body part (eyes, ears, nose, ect.) is considered mayhem and is a felony. Lol, I was just suprised that you considered hitting someone in the temple with a hook punch a little extreme. This is a sucker punch. The entire purpose of the technique is to render the person in capable of attacking you before they have the chance to attack you.

I wouldn't rip someone's ear off unless I had to.
