its too much gear for my tastes.. They are olympic level, why so much protection?! They are geared up like freakin yellow belts in a mc-dojo.. Its irritating..

Have you ever fought with gloves and and headgear? Its ridiculous! You cant hear a damn thing.. And the gloves make you feel like a chicken-pox patient..

I dont see how anyone expects to develop practical skill while wearing protective gear, its just stupid. I hate protective gear.. mma gloves are good, cups are good, mouthpeices are good, everything else is B.S.

Many of the olympic level guys with the protective gear you talk about go own to be professional fighters. I doubt if the gear inhibits their skills.

When I teach self-defense seminars, the last thing I tell the class about choosing a school is that if you walk into a "self-defense" school and see no protective gear...they're not teaching self-defense, what they are teaching is most likely more similar to dance than fighting.

In the early days, before MMA was "cool", my training partners and I use to train as you suggested, with only mouthpieces, cups and shinpads, going 100%. The result was several broken hands, bruised and broken ribs and concussions...and cancelled fights.
It wasn't until we watched a Randy Couture training session that we realized how stupid we had been. He was not only a "pro fighter" but one of the greatest ever and he used lots of safety gear.
From then on, we decided to train smart and hard, rather that just hard.

Unlike boxing, MMA is in it's infancy when it comes to figuring out the best way to train safely without getting hurt. Currently, Modern MMA is suffering from tons of training injuries. They still haven't figured it out yet.

How tough can you been on the "streets" if you have two broken hands, concussion, broken ribs, bruised thighs, fractured tibia, detached retina and swollen eyes that inhibit your vision?

I know a guy who had two broken hands and both were boxer breaks at the pinky knuckle. They occurred within the same week. One was from a fight in which he punched a guy knocking him out. He felt great until his hand swelled up. The other occurred when he punched a wall out of anger. Long story short he couldn't wipe his own butt. He wasn't touch for about 2 months.

moral: when you get blinded by rage -if you punch a wall you'll have dingle-berries for weeks.

Its not that I totally disagree with gear, i just dont like it, personally.. Gloves are irritating as hell.. No offense to boxers, but i cringe when I see them hit a bag with fully wrapped wrists and gloves, I dont know why... I just do..

Look at thai fighters, burmese boxers, they are badasses. No gear.. Well, gloves. So its still kind of annoying. But I can understand gloves, but they should use mma gloves imo..

It just makes them look amateur.. Olympic level athletes, with all that gear on.

Ancient greeks fought butt naked.
