Tim's Discussion Board: Concepts : Bruce lee's training regimen and unfortunate death, are they linked...

im just wondering if anyone has any opinions on bruce lee's training regimen, (very arduous with coverage in every area from running to weightlifting/isotonic exercise, focusing on building pure functional martial muscle) compared to the gradual (one paper at a time method) nature of chinese ima's, its rather obvious that bruce did not really study the chinese ima's (please correct me if im wrong, of course we all know that he studied wing chun, which imo combines internal and external stuff.

anyway,

could bruce lee's unfortunate death have arrived from his training habits? and is this why( not directly influenced by) the chinese ima's have a more gradual system of bulding the kung fu body(some slower then others jk) and if so, what do you think pushed the envelope for the late great teacher bruce lee?

although his approach was highly effective for him, was it a wise one?

I doubt he worked out any harder than any professional MMA fighter today, they seem to be doing allright.

Bruce Lee was poisoned by the Hong Kong mafia.

We may never know the real reason. In chinese kung fu circles one belief about breathing incorrectly (which can happen when your struck the right way in the middle of a fight and Bruce was in a LOT of them) and pivoting of the torso while exerting great effort of muscular strength in combination can cause growths in the throat, lungs to blow out, and even strokes can occur. It is also believed that sometimes a delayed effect can happen, no different than whiplash manifesting after two months of a car wreck etc.... Why does the spine take so long to show damage?
In light of this type of information I personally agree with the coroners report of "Death by misadventure". Ultimately what killed Bruce was Bruce!

One theory I read from a friend of Bruce was that he was on steroids.

His reasoning was - steroids were popular among elite athletes at the time (late 60s, early 70s). They were readily available, not illegal, and were commonly endorsed by doctors, there being no real research done into their long term effects.

Bruce was an excercise fanatic - so him learning about, and using, roids does not seem so far out.

It would also explain his reputed 'mood swings' during his later years.

Most people (particularly those that knew him) have dismissed this theory - and I think it's probably off base, but interesting nonetheless.

i just had to correct myself, i found a book by bruce in which he displayed a few different concepts which he used Before he learned wing chun, he called it gong fu, and in the book were various static like mabu stances, and a couple drawings on the alignmnt of the seven stars... just had to say that.

what about Stalin and Hitler?

By Jason M. Struck on Tuesday, June 27, 2006 - 05:10 pm: Edit Post

Hitler was a methamphetamine user. They say that it was actually the large and frequent doses of meth that caused him to become even more crazy towards the end of the war.

you know the way those speed freaks are, always stealin someone's stereo and gettin into fights.
Just on a way bigger scale.
yeah, so, nothin funnier than Hitler...
that's what I talk about now.
No-one wants to hear about grappling or strength training, so that's what we got. Historical drug trivia and tragic black comedy.

apprentice here,
a friend of mine was on speed once. one of the funniest things i've ever seen. he thought he could fly. turns out he couldnt. good thing he found out by jumping in a pool directly on the top of my head instead of jumping off of a building. I prolly had a concusion, just a guess since i can't remember anything else of that day. 180 pound kid jumpin on a 110 pound kid...fun fun.
i look back at it and realize it was completely dumb, he looks back at it and is proud. guess it's all where ur head is. Well i know mine is pretty damn hard since his shin was swollen double if not triple.

how could you not smoke pot in 1973?

I don't think Bruce Lee's martial training regime killed him. It was his overall life style. He insisted on training many hours every day, but was also a workaholic with his movies.

Too little sleep killed him!!!

Oh, and I believe it is acknowledged that his father practiced Taiji, so I am sure Bruce picked up a little of that. But his first (and only) real MA instruction was in Wing Chun. Everything that came after (when he was in the US) was more along the lines of cross-training with peers and not studying with instructors.

Thanks,
Richard
