Tim;
I would like to confirm that my pushing hands practice is sound. Would you please remark on the following:

Thank you,
Ron

I'm assuming we are talking about San Shou or Rou Shou type freeform pushing hands.

The method of training begins with students learning to adhere to and follow the movements of their partner. The idea is to maintain contact but not resist force against force.

The strategy: You want to keep your partner from controlling your movement and center as you attempt to control him (so that you can ultimately strike or throw him to the ground without encountering resistance).

Strikes with the palms, fists, shoulders, and hips are allowed. Strikes should be thrown from the original contact and in the flow of momentum. Disengaging to strike is not correct. Striking with the elbows, knees and kicks above the knees aren't allowed.

Any kind of sweep, throw or takedown is fine. All types of take downs should be set up and entered from the original contact positions and in the flow of momentum. Clinching before the throw is not encouraged. Strickly speaking, sacrafice throws are not allowed in formal push hands practice.

Any type of chin na or jointlocking technique is allowed, whether resulting in a throw or a submission.
