First off, once your body mechanics are correct, the only difference between a push and a pulse is the rate at which the force is transferred to the target. So the main concern is to transfer the force in the shortest amount of time to produce a pulse or shocking force.

The structure has to be aligned correctly and the muscles relaxed, but there can be no gap or 'leakage' in the flow of force through the body to the target. Once you can align the body correctly and understand the basic method of generating whole body power, certain images usually help with the delivery of force.

One image that many students find useful is from the Yi Quan school. The image is that just as your weapon (palm, fist...) makes contact with the target, you sink your weight to the front foot. As your weight transfers to the front foot, you rebound back as if the floor collapsed beneath your foot. This begins to give you the feeling of transferring force in a sort space of time. It is sometimes easier to start with images that cause force to transfer a little more slowly than a true pulse, but close. For example, you can practice knocking your partner back with both palms as if trying to strike a huge rubber ball. You don't want to push the ball, you want to knock it as far away as possible (have your partner hold a pad!).

Familiar images like these help because they are easily related to things we have all done, and they take the focus away from using brute force and help you move with mind and body unity.
