Fist strength

Tim's Discussion Board: Concepts : Fist strength
By Arthur on Thursday, December 13, 2001 - 03:03 am: Edit Post

Hi Tim,
The wrist and knuckes can only take so much pressure before they are injured or break. How can a person condition their wrists and knuckles (besides hitting a heavy bag)? If your body can generate more energy than what your fists can take, then the fists become the thing which inhibit progress to strike harder.
Thanks.

Hi Arthur,
Besides hitting a heavy bag (which is probably the best conditioner of the fists), you can do variations of 'knuckle' push ups. Any type will do, as long as you maintain a straight wrist throughout the movements (for example, wide grip knuckle push ups are potentially injurious).
Another good conditioning mehtod for closed fist punches, for the wrists in particular is isometrics. Make a fist with one hand and grab the back of the fist with the other. Now apply pressure with the hand behind the fist (as if you want to bend the wrist of the closed hand inward) and resist with an equal amount of pressure with your fist. Repeat pushing the front and both sides of the fist. Working with heavy weapons (staffs and swords) are also good conditioners for the wrist, as well as improving grip strength.

Authur In my 20s, I spend some months hitting a makiwara (punching post) 800 times per hand, three times a week. It did wonders for me, though I have sence discarded that punching style.

Look into what is called a 'boxers fracture' karate people get them too. We 'condition' the knuckles used for point of impact and the wrist, but on moving targets sometimes the smallest knuckles are the ones that impact, and the puncher never thinks in advance to 'condition' those as well.

When doing pushups on your fists do them just as much or more on the smallest knuckles than on the primary knuckles, but in the long run, it's better to use a different 'weapon' as Bob suggested, or a different method of delivering the striking force.
