Forward or rear weighting?

Tim's Discussion Board: Concepts : Forward or rear weighting?
By Mark Hatfield on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 12:10 am: Edit Post

Found a comment on european/american fighters of the eighteen hundreds which claimed that they preferred rear weighted stances when combining boxing with grapling (mixed arts) but front weighted stances if boxing alone. It made me think of how Gao Ba Qua prefers front weighting and the Yin versions seem to prefer back weighting. The author also commented on a preference for extended arm positions in mma of the time but closer guards when only boxing. Comments?, preferences? Tim or anyone.

from my experience, front weighting makes you more susceptible to sweeps and trips. though it is an effective way of generating punching power.

From my experience, being back weighted also makes you very vulnerable to throw, sweeps and trips that land you on your back.

I prefer to be "slightly" front weighted as it gives me more driving power for throws or setting up throws... though I feel it's good to be flexeble enough to change when you need to.

i get my lead leg swept a lot.

I am probably 60/40 or 70/30 on my lead.

but I couldn't do crap grappling wise laying back.

hmm... so where is your weight when you are performing a sweep?

I don't do a lot of sweeps.

when I do, it's Hiza Guruma/Sasae, or occasionally a o/ko uchi gari (the banana peel variation).

With Hiza/Sasae, I have left my typical stance for one more narrow and 50/50 weight (until i lift the lead, then it's more like 0/100).

With Ko uchi gari, my weight is forward. It's sort of a 'lean on you until you can't stand up anymore' approach, or I perform Ko uchi maki komi as it is often called.
