I suggest getting a copy of either "Stretching Scientifically" by Thomas Kurz (Stadion), or "Beyond Stretching" by Pavel Tsatsouline (Dragon Door Publications).

This will tell you almost everything you need to know about stretching...Free!:http://www.afn.org/skydive/sta/stretch/

You have to first ask yourself why are you stretching. That's going to dictate the method.

If you are recovering from an injury then PNF is the best method.

If you just want to do contortions or show off then PNF is still the best.

If you want to improve your athletic performance then dynamic stretching and mobility drills are best. And this is a must read: http://www.circularstrengthmag.com/25/sonnon3.html

facilitated stretching by Magee is a great intro to PNF (contract/relax) inspired stretching. It's very clinical. Or you can check out Pavel Tsatsouline.
