Tim's Discussion Board: Off Topic : Difference in aikido vs Taiji ?

Hi

I´ve recently started Aikido - been doing it for a year now.

When I´m at the dojo the teachers tell me that I shouldn´t "bounce up and down" as they call it
when Im doing the techniques - what they mean by that is that I should have my head in the same height at all time.
When doing the form from the dvd sun taiji I do "bounce up and down" cause by doing that I get as much power in to the movement as possible
as I understand it.

Are there different ways to create power in Aikido vs Taiji or are the two arts different in theire principles?

Hi Tobbe,

You'll find different teachers advocating different ways to move and generate power within a single art, Taijiquan for example, so it's not surprising teachers from a different art like Aikido have different ideas on body use.

Since you are devoting time to Aikido practice, I suggest you practice Aikido as taught by your teachers until you internalize their method, then you can make an informed decision on what works best for you.
