Hi

Last week we were doing shionage in class and the headteacher was talking about ukemi and told us to, the one who was uke, to try to feel where in the technique one could get out of it, and if possible , counter
I've never thought about ukemi that way, to me it'has always been about to find the way to the mat, ground that hurts as little as possible

Btw Are there a "standard - counter" to shionage?

Regards
Tobbe

If you practice BJJ you'll learn about breakfalling into the most advantageous ground position the first week of class. It becomes a very relevant skill when ground fighting is allowed.

What kind of throw is "shionage?"

Sorry - it should be shihonage - four corner/direction throw

Aikido style Shihonage isn't normally found in Judo, BJJ or wrestling, as it would be difficult to set up and execute when fighting a trained grappler.

A trained grappler will keep their elbows in tight as much as possible, making a technique like Shihonage highly unlikely to be successfully applied.

A "standard" Aikido counter is to turn around in a 360º circle away from the arm that the opponent is attempting to lock, so you end up in the same position as you started.

A simpler, wrestling based counter would be to pull your elbow down and in tight to your body as your opponent attempts to spin underneath.

Before I asked about possible counters I looked on the net but I didn't find any but I found one today

I don't know how effective it would be against a good grappler but still - It's a counter

The movements are good against "passive resistance" (LEO, Security...)

When I studied Aikido and Traditional JJ, after a couple of years, I challenge 4 of my blackbelt instructors. As a wrestler, I didn't think the stuff would work. They swore it would. They were all wrong.

As a bouncer, I used Aikido and Traditional JJ and standing wrestling more than anything.

It would be nice to have some bouncer stories, but im not THAT good to be putting my life at risk for a paycheck...

I was more of a "sleep in the truck" type of security guard.

I can see you guys now. Grindhouse?
