36 stratagems project

Tim's Discussion Board: Off Topic : 36 stratagems project
By Grazing Grasshopper on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 06:23 am: Edit Post

The idea here is to build a collection of posts from everyone giving real world examples of how they utilized these stratagems

in their life. Please include the number of the stratagem with your example. This Will NOt Work Without Your Participation!

But First:

The 36 stratagems were divided into six categories, depending on situation. This division was always fluid and flexible, for the

Chinese view of war is that the situation continually changes. These are:

1. Stratagems for the Stronger Force
2. Stratagems for Two Equal Forces
3. STRATAGEMS FOR DIRECT ATTACK
4. STRATAGEMS TO CONFUSE THE ENEMY
5. STRATAGEMS TO GAIN GROUND
6. STRATAGEMS BEFORE THE LAST STAND

It is said that if a man truly understands something he can explain it in very few words.
Keeping this in mind the order of arrangement that follows is:
---The divisions of 6
---Each of the six explained in one sentence
--each of the 6 strategies in the 6 categories, Yes, the repetition of 6's will enable to be the anti christ of your own little world!

Group 1: Stratagems for the Stronger Force.
-to be utilized when you have the advantage.

1. Deceive the sky to cross the sea
-concealment of intention through being completely honest and in the open.

2.Besiege Wei to rescue Zhao
-redirect an enemies energy by attacking that which is close them.

03. Kill with a borrowed knife
-Convince others to fight your battles for you.
---instead of me thinking of examples I have you supplying them for me! Thank you! (see number 10) :-)

04. Wait at ease for the enemy
-If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them.

05.Loot a burning house
- If your opponent suffers an adversity not related to your battle, you can use the diversion of his attention, energy, and

resources to further weaken him.

06. Make a feint to the east while attacking in the west
-misdirection

Group 2. Stratagems for Two Equal Forces
-when you and an enemy are of equal or close to equal strengths/terms.

07. Create something out of nothing
-Get what you need by trickery or illusion

08. Use a well-known path to advance by a hidden path
-Use the commonly expected strategy to hide the real strategy.

09. Watch the fire burning across the river
-Use delay if it enhances in-fighting within the enemy alliances.

10. Conceal a dagger in a smile
-Concealing a dagger with a smile may be taken as advice to be treacherous, but it also has an honorable side. You can be

powerful and dangerous---and polite.

11. Cut down the plum tree to save the peach tree
When you cannot avoid losses, sacrifice the lesser for the benefit of the greater.

12. Steal any passing goat
-Make use of everything you get from the other side as a means of survival, escape, or creating mayhem.

Group 3 STRATAGEMS FOR DIRECT ATTACK

13. Beat the grass to startle the snake
-Frighten or startle the enemy to see how he will react.

14. Raise a corpse from the dead
-Use a persons past to haunt them or a religious belief against them.

15. Lure the tiger out of the mountain
-Bring the opponent out from a situation that favors him to a situation that favors you. Make the enemy play on your field,

provoke them into playing your game.

16. Let the enemy off in order to snare him
-self explanatory

17. Hold out a brick to attract a gem
-present a no pressure situation as a means of enticing further action.

18. To catch rebels, bring down their leader first
-remove the god like status and prove to the enemy that the leader is just a man.

Group 4. STRATAGEMS TO CONFUSE THE ENEMY

19. Take away the fire from under the cauldron
-take away the fuel.

20. Fish in troubled waters
-Sometimes waters become troubled by storms you haven't created. Whether or not you throw your opponent's resources into

confusion, be sure to take advantage of disarray in the other camp.

21. The cicada sheds its skin
-decoys

22. Bolt the door to catch the thief
- Sometimes a person gets himself into a trap, and all that is necessary is that you shut the door behind them.

23. Befriend a distant state while attacking a neighbour
-the enemy of an enemy is a friend

24. Borrow a route to conquer Guo
-This stratagem advises using an ally's strategic location as a launch point for your own troops.

Group 5 STRATAGEMS TO GAIN GROUND
-for aquiring an advantage, once aquired refer to group 1

26. Point at the mulberry only to curse the locust
-To the person who can carry it off, clearly telling an opponent his strategic mistakes and promising to exploit them and defeat

the opponent is one way to win
----a Mr. V. strategy!

27. Feigning foolishness
- King David, Odysseus, Claudius, and an early writer of the I Ching were all men who survived danger by pretending to be

insane or mentally deficient. It's not fun to be thought of as stupid, but it is safer than to be reckoned intelligent and therefore

dangerous.

28. Remove the ladder after the ascent
-Create an opening into a precarious place and draw the opponent into a trap

29. Putting fake blossoms on the tree
-All warfare is based on deception.

30. Host and guest reversed
-This stratagem applies to taking over without violence.

6. STRATAGEMS BEFORE THE LAST STAND
-The final set of stratagems are the riskiest of the entire group, and they require finesse and skill. These are reserved for the

high stakes gamble and can be used successfuly only by experienced commanders.

31. Beauty trap
-self explanatory, also reffers to kunoichi-use of females

32. Empty city ploy
-If all is lost, and your resources are exhausted or depleted, try the unexpected.

33. Use the enemy's spies to sow discord in the enemy's camp
- This tactic can be enormously successful, but it is stowed away in the last section of the stratagems because creating

double agents and sowing believable rabbit trails in the mind of the opponent require time and a great deal of finesse.

34. Inflict injury on oneself to win the enemy's trust
-A strategy that has worked when a leader absolutely had to find out what his foes were thinking was to create an open

disruption between himself and a trusted assistant.

35. Interlocking stratagems
-If your own forces are exhausted and depleted, then the time is not right to launch a decisive battle. Rather, use all the rules

and strategies to whittle down the opponent.

36. He Who Runs Away Today Lives to Fight Another Day
-retreat is the better part of valour.

you no likee puzzle box? (Think Hellraiser)

The symbols used in Law of two(Loa tsoo) post were referenced from a prior post of mine about using the accessories>narrator function. You used the character map.

I elaborated on this and noticed then when you hold the cursor over the character the computer language (?) eqivalent showed up.

It would take a lot of time to figure out the symbols selected:

they translate too:

Latin Wax.
get it, got it, good!

Yeah I know I said the last post would be my last post.....just cant resist learning or wisdom, of which are in abundance here for those who have eyes, the ability to think and confront themselves( I am not as smart as I think I am-thanks for pointing out the ways to me MR.V!)
with honesty.

My time has become much divided as I am being paid to use my brain for assesment and money making purposes. On top of this I am moving. I will check back when I can.

One man has allowed for all of this to be possible- Master TIm Cartmell!
If you think this board is full of wisdom, try buying and reading his books!

much love to you all....
