Fighting Multiple Armed Opponents

Tim's Discussion Board: Off Topic : Fighting Multiple Armed Opponents

It is too bad that people intentionally ruin this discussion board with "humour". Good discussions begin, and inevitably someone destroys it. I don't think that a martial artist would do that, because they want to learn. Since there is no filtering of the discussion (and I do recommend filtering to ensure that sincere people stay interested and contribute), it is best not to respond to or acknowledge stupid comments.

I agree Scott and this will be my last word on this particular subject as I would rather converse with adults.
El, I claim no prowess. The loss of my own life and for that matter the rest of the passengers on board pales in comparison to the number that lost their lives at the WTC. Those people on the Pennsylvania flight were heroes and your juvenile comment does their memory a grave injustice. I would hope I would have the courage to do exactly what they did and damn the concequences. Your mother must be proud.

Hey guys,
Lets just take a little step back here.
Each individual has his or her own way of handling the advent of tragedy, be it with humour or cynicism etc. Sometimes we have to look a little beyond the facade to realize the connection between all of us.

Alot of times people will react with their own psycic buffer zones in order to prevent feeling pain. This only demonstrates the depth of their feeling and awareness of the situation.

I suggest, instead of chastising them for their actions, we could work to find some common ground in truth and eventual harmony with one another.

Is this not what internal arts teaches us?
Is it not all about connecting, Joining and having the situation defined?

Buddy,

In light of the recent tragedy perhaps "comedy" should be of a refrained manner.

Not to speak for Bob #2 but perhaps this is his way of retaining "normalacy" by invoking humor.

I know my own emotions have moved between a number of extremes.Sadness, anger, fear, apprehension of the future.

I have a 17 yr old son.I witness young parents holding their young offspring with the look of uncertainty and apprehension.

And yet there are those who perhaps choose to
"lighten the load".Projecting our emotions on those who are percieved to be insensitive to the recent tragedy could be misplaced.

Because in this time of tragedy it is very hard to discern the intentions of people.

Not that it matters what I think but I give Bob #2 the benefit of the doubt.

Like the trainer rubbing his apprenhensive fighter before a fight,I view his humor and commentary as perhaps his way of massaging our fears and reminding us of who we were before the tragedy and hopefully who we will be after,an effort to lighting the load, and a reminder that if they steal our minds...

Alright...

It's pointless to psychoanalyze a fictitious character like Bob #2.

So all you amateur Psychologist just shut up!!!

Bob #2 is a humorist, a comedian and even a smart ass. That's what he does. When it gets a little too serious he adds some comic relief. That's it.

"Martial Artist" tend to get way too serious and uptight. Just RELAX and enjoy the humor.

Now, let's talk about knife fighting!!!

I was commenting on what happens on this discussion board. It begins well and jut gets silly and off track. No objection to humour, but silliness for the sake of disruption wastes time.

Scott,

I agree. The best thing to do is just ignore Bob #2 and get on with the discussion. He's probably laughing at how people made such a big deal of it.

Now let's talk about fighting with a knife!!!

Anybody in here ever sparred with rubber knives against multiple opponents?

Something I just remembered: If you have a chance, get a copy of "Surviving Edged Weapons." It is produced by Calibre Press, originally intended as a training tape for law enforcement personnel.

You guys think Bob #2 is bad?! You should see Bob #1. He really exists and used to be Bob #2's teacher. Compared to him Bob #2 is mild-mannered. By the way he doesn't really have stumps. Sorry Bob #2.

As Meynard says, lets talk about knives!

If one did not have time to make a cloth "shield", would the following approach have merit?:

1. Feinting with back of the fist and forearm
2. Kicking the attackers front knee
3. Stepping to the sideways and forward to the outside of the knife holding arm, and gaining control with hands at the wrist and elbow of the knife hand.
4. Applying leverage to the elbow, and walking or pushing the person to the ground or to into an object (like a wall).
5. Pinning or kicking the knife hand (now on the ground in order to disable the hand and disarm him)
6. Beating the living •••• out the person who just tried to kill you so he doesn't try again in a few moments.

What I learned from my cousins is to not even worry about disarming. Control the weapon hand and move to the outside. Don't let them switch hands with the weapon. Once you have complete control of the weapon hand apply simple leverage right away and break the arm or run the attacker to a solid object, like a wall or a parked car. You can even throw them into traffic. It's common in the RP. You want to smash their face or head in to something. The ground is good. Keep them turned away from you. Keep good position and control then deal out the punishment.

Hi Tim,
I believe I've seen the video:"surviving edged weapons". Is Danny Inosanto the attacker in the video? If he is, it's the one I seen.
Thanks,
John

Erik,

Since I am Bob #1, and was never Bob #2's teacher I think you are mistaken. I understand he does have stumps from an awful accident. My word, don't you think we should demonstrate some compassion?

John,

I believe that is the tape. I have also seen this one.

Hi Bob,
Thanks. I thought that was the name of it. Seen it in a class I attended at a local college.
As a side note: Has anyone been told about a straw(yes a drinking straw) being used as a weapon?

I believe the attacker in the edged weapons video was Leo Gage. Leo Gage is a long time Philipino practicioner based out of New York.

correction: *Bob Shores is Bob.
(the original Bob to post here)

*Bob #1 is a whole nother Bob
(it turns out Bob isn't a rare name)
(Bob#1 does not have stumps but
could easily be angered enough
to chew through his own ankles
to escape a tight pair of shoes
with badly knotted laces- and
was, indeed, my Tai Ji teacher,
Erik's, senior Student. Last thing
I heard of Bob #1 is that he
knocked out one of his students
during a discussion of form vs
function... right or wrong, it
doesn't pay to disagree with
some folks).

*Bob #2 does have stumps for feet,
trains hardcore submission
fighting to terrified senior
citizens and prepubescent
chemo kids at various cancer
wards around LA and Orange County.
Travels the country in a tireless
crusade to beat down all
chi-huggers and return IMA to
their original state- powerful
fighting arts. If someone, elderly
or otherwise, mentions they know
anything about Martial Arts
Bob#2 immediately and
violently tests their
knowledge. But is, much to his
chagrin, a completely fictional
character invented to assist
in exercising my warped sense
of humor, for which, I blame my
parents.)
