Is punching to the face better with knuckles straight or pointing downwards?

With the spike of the bones hitting head on? Like when you hit the ribs and stomach and generally on the body as well as the arm you want to make contact with the knuckles and not the flat fist so how bout the face? I only learned to fight with gloves and sport fighting most of the time so thats why Im asking. I remember a systema video showing how inneffective flat fisted hitting was to the body.

I usually use chop and/or ridge hand my victims right in the neck. If that doesn't work, I use my spear hand to stab the torso.

Phoenix eyes, ginger fists, monkey knuckle, donkey punch they're all good.

Punching may not be the best way to strike the face, especially if you are able to generate a fair amount of power. If you are sure you will connect with the chin or jaw, the striking surface should be the big knuckles.

Otherwise, it's safer for your hand to use an open palm, a hammer fist or your elbow.

I mean is it better to have the knuckle extended to hit first on hard surfaces like ribs or face or have it flat thats what I meant by my original question in case anyone misunderstands. Ill try to look for that systema clip where a guy takes flat hits to his gut until he gats hit with bone/knuckle first.
