Shoulder higher than other?

Tim's Discussion Board: Off Topic : Shoulder higher than other?
By Brian Kennedy on Monday, June 24, 2002 - 05:34 am: Edit Post

I took a look in the mirror the other day and noticed two things. Both of which disturbed me, but only one of which I can explain. I noticed I am getting old, but I know why that is.

I also noticed that my left shoulder is noticeably higher than my right. When I am relaxed (at least I think I am relaxed) the left shoulder is at least an inch or two higher than the right. I am right handed.

Any idea what could cause this? Is it ¡§normal¡¨?

Brian,

Not sure this applies to you but I got the same problem, I think it came from carrying a shoulder strap bag with heavy school books as a teen (when my bones were developing). I wore it systematically on the right shoulder. I now have a minor scoliosis as a consequence (which Tim pinpointed when I met him).

It could be normal variation. Could be induced, like the shoulder strap situation. Could be tension.

Try standing in the natural position, arms handing loosely at your sides for several weeks. Increase the time every day. This can allow much tension in the shoulders and neck to relax.

Very often these types of problems need physical therapy. Often PT's can recommend specific weight training exercises that can balance out the problem.

For me, I noticed the same thing after discovering I had twe bulging disks. My internal coach noticed it first.

According to my doc, the MRI shows the upper disk (L5) is bulging off center just a bit to that side.

JOHN DOE
I ALSO WEAR A SHOULDER STRAP BAG AND I CAN TELL ONE OF MY SHOULDERS IS HIGHER THAN THE OTHER. HOW CAN IT BE FIXED MAYBE BY SWITCHING THE BAG TO THE OTHER SHOULDER TO EVEN IT OUT?

I have the same exact situation with my shoulder. I first noticed when trying on a suit but it didnt look proper. I used to carry my bag on my right shoulder. Also, i noticed that my right shoulder is LONGER than the left.

One of my testicles hangs lower than the other. It must because I used to carry my book bag aroung on it when going to school. Should I use weights to exercise them to aleviate the difference?

Bob#3,

You're question is somewhat off topic but it sounds like you snoozed through phys-ed 101.

Every man has one testicle slightly lower than the other- this helps them stack up in the scrotal sack when the legs are crossed (otherwise the testicles would clang together).

Using weights will stretch out the scrotal sack (making matters worse) rather than tightening it up. Try a cold bath immediately followed by liberal application of super glue.

if your scrotum is not naturally hairless you may want to shave it first... I recommend a hot bath prior to shaving.

Just a quick addition. Check with a chiropractor. Sometimes these habitual posture issues/repetitive stress adaptations can be greatly improved with chiropractic treatments. I had the same thing where one shoulder was slightly higher than the other, and the same side hip was slightly higher than the other as well. A host of daily activities can mess with body alignment. In case there is some bone and spine misalignment I suggest going to the chiropractor first and then letting him direct you to weightlifting and postural relaxation techniques based on how successful his treatments are.

Just to put in my two cents as a therapist... Most likely the problem is from muscles(possibly scalenes)that have tightened and shortened from stress and repetition. I'd suggest having a structural massage therapist have a go at you.

I know this might sound stupid, but what do you do for a living?

I'm a waiter, and I noticed not too long ago that my right shoulder was about twice as big as my left. I attribute it to carrying heavy loads with my right arm on a constant basis for about the last 15 years or so.

I read in a book on sports medicine about some pro football player who had a nerve severed in his shoulder early in his career. The nerve controlled the deltoid (shoulder muscle) and it took him a while but he learned how to use other muscles to lift his arm. He wore a specially built up shoulder pad over the shoulder to hide the fact that it had withered from the other team and went on to a successful career. Too bad I can't remember his name though.

I once read a book about this guy who had one shoulder higher than the other, but was so strong anyway, that when a huge crowd of idiots showed up to execute the girl he loved, he was able to throw big beams and bricks down on them, and could even ring the huge church bells that made him deaf.

I think I've heard that story before Kenneth.

Reading the last two posts gave me the urge to shout for "sanctuary" but Lon Chaney Sr, Charles Laughton and Anthony Quinn said it better than me on the silver screen.

Ah, but I've seen all three versions, how many people can say that?

Hi. I have the same problem as you guys do w/my shoulder. I used to lift weights only with my right arm a few years ago. My right shoulder hangs lower. I am only 16, should i get this checked out by a doctor?

Thanks!
