Tim's Discussion Board: Off Topic : Xing I, Bagua, Taiji, Instructional Videos

Is it possible to learn much xing yi or any internal and gain anything from instructional videos. I realize nothing compares to a qualified instructor, but some people live with none around. I would appreciate some sound advice.

Best always

Hey Mike,
YES, you can (& most likely will) gain some good lessons from instructional videos, especially provided that the videos you choose to study have good instruction (so a good start is to purchase Tim's books & related videos). I used to relieve some back pains using an exercise I watched on Tim's "True-Balance Dynamics" video years before I ever met him (as at that time he was living in China while I was living in California).
With video tapes you can repeat a lesson often -- even slow it down for further study -- and not annoy the instructor. So you can learn some, but to learn a lot you'll probably want to seek out a good instructor & decent training partners.
Physically training in accordance with a good video will give you something: a start at least. Then you can keep your eye out for good, relevant seminars -- perhaps even arrange some yourself if you can drum up sufficient interest in your neck of the woods (& whether you go to them or they come to you, seminars will give you a taste of what instruction with a good instructor is all about).
Once you have some info from a video, you can then post questions about same on Tim's discussion boards for further input.
Also, videos can give you an idea of what else is out there in the wide, wide world of martial arts (& brute-strength brawling for that matter) without great expense. You'll begin to discern & determine what you like, and what your (& others')weaknesses are, etc.
P.S.: While uncertain as to why you weren't answered earlier, I'll venture a guess that the answer (or much of it) was obvious (i.e.: Tim, a good instructor, makes videos to sell; now just stop & think about it: if nothing could be learned from videos, then Tim, being a good instructor, would not make videos...). Well, that's my sound advice. :)
