Tim's Discussion Board: Xing Yi Quan: Is Xingyiquan a Taoist Art?: Archive through February 23, 2004

Is there really any connection between Taoism & Xingyi? Or is Xingyi just an art that contains some Taoist concepts? I would think Bagua is more of a Taoist art than Xingyi.

It has Daoist cosmological theory as its foundation, so can be called a daoist art. If it was invented or modified by daoists nobody knows. Dong hai chun gave different skills to his students based on what they already knew. He taught concepts rather than techniques. He himself was a seasoned fighter who had trained in a number of styles. Daoists can normally generate various forces but they rarly fix these into set patterns unless those patterns follow the way of nature. Was Bagua a whole art when Dong hai chun learned it? did he himself create the art from individual exercises he was taught? or was it his students who adapted it to their own needs? Daoist arts are ones that leave you with myriad possiblites so Xingyi qualifies on this level too.

Where do these freaks come from? Dude this is not a hippy site...go away.

These guys actually use martial arts for fighting not theorizing about daoist cosmology.

Calm down Bruce.

JWelks asked if Xingyi has any connection to Taoism. It's not a bad question. Asking questions is how we learn and you have the right to either accept or not accept other people's responses or opinions.

As far as using 'martial arts' for fighting & theorizing on Taoist cosmology...Yin and Yang coexist together. You cannot have one without the other. You cannot fight (Yang) if you are not healthy (Yin). Health comes first my friend.

Have a good day.

"Health comes first."

Shites..

My doctor told me that before prescribing me some anti-psychotic medication. It made my kung fu really weak. I just didn't feel like myself. So, I stopped taking it and I actually feel much better. People are afraid of me again. I'm healthier when I'm the one doing the beating and not the one getting beaten up.

Bruce Leroy,

You should not feel healthier when hurting others, because you will only hurt yourself at the end.

I agree with Budda.

Even though Xingyi is considered to be the most agressive among the internal arts, the classics state that you should NOT use brute strength during execution of its movements.

Thank you.

Maybe I should practice Aikido to learn the way of harmony. Thanks for your input.

No brute force!

That's why Xingyi is called "Form Mind Boxing". Use the Mind, not strength.

If I practice hard can I start making objects fly towards my opponent like Darth Vader did to Luke? Isn't that the ultimate way of using the mind?

Who's the freak now?!

Bruce, you're not ready for Hsing-I.

Bruce, thanks for entertaining us. But I won't waist my time any further with someone who is impatient and unwilling to learn.

Tim Cartmell, please share your Xingyi experience with Bruce and the rest of us as well.

I'm moving over to the section on Nine Baguazhang. Pete needs some info on that subject.

Xingyiquan was invented by an illiterate warrior named Ji Longfeng. Ji was a master spear fighter, and professional soldier. Since the bulk of his time was devoted to training and killing, I doubt he spent much time on philosophy.

Impatient? Huh? Me? NO...

Please grace me with your supreme knowledge of Xing Yi Mr. KStevens.

LOL

Hippies are so easy to goof on.

O.K. Guys,
I sorry I've been such an ass. I just want you guys to think I'm cool, and we can all train together!

Well thanks, but I'm the real Bruce Leroy and I'm not sorry for goofing on all the dumb hippies that post here and I will never train with them because I'll end up slapping all of them silly.

Perhaps you should take some chinese herbs or learn meditation or medical qigong, I recomend 5 elements qigong practice. Bruce if your doctor told you to take anti-psychotics there must be something wrong. Internal arts are meant to heal a person as well as be used for self defence. If you do the movements incorectly you may damage yourself.

I'm off the the meds. Now I just meditate naked once a week underneath a waterfall. I'm having a hard time dealing with the cold water. What do you think I should do?
