tim,do you know much about this style.

I'm guessing you are refering to the branch of Shan Xi Xing Yi Quan passed down from Sung Shi Rong. Song Shi Rong was a student of Li Neng Ran, who is credited with creating the "Five Elements" brances of Xing Yi Quan. Song Shi Rong passed the art down to three of his sons, the most famous of which was Song Tie Lin. It is one of the popular branches of Shan Xi Xing Yi Quan.

My mistake, Song Shi Rong's son was Song Hu Chen, Song Tie Lin was his student, not his son.

Outside of the Tai Gu area of Shan Xi, I don't know how many teachers there are from Song Hu Chen's lineage.

thanks tim.the reason i am asking is that i wish to go to tai gu and study under one of the song family maters,i hope someone under song hu chen lineage.tim do you belive that the shanxi based systems generate more power then the hebei systems?.who was your shanxi(song) si-fu in china.

It's hard to say which system generates the most power. A good teacher in either branch can show you how to generate alot of force. I will say the Shan Xi systems are a little more subtle, and include more 'sticking' to and borrowing of the opponent's force. On the other hand, in my experience, the He Bei styles are somewhat easier to learn, especially in the early stages of training.
If you go to Tai Gu I suggest looking up practitioners under Li Gui Chang. Mao Ming Chun in particular. Try calling (0351) 701-0711.

greetings tim, just a note! i have seen the old system of song family and the new system,.the old system holds the goose as one of the animals, this is what is passed down by song hu chen.the book which is out now on the song family is the "new" teachings of the system not the old song style.!

Hi William,
Like I said above, I don't know of any teachers in Song Hu Chen's lineage, although I'm sure there are some in Tai Gu.

Hi Tim,

Are you aware of any commercially available VCD/DVD/VHS tape of Li Gui Chang's Hsing Yi? If not from Li Gui Chang, maybe his students?

Thank you!

By Tim on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 11:56 am: Edit Post

Marc,
No, I've never seen tapes by Li or his students.

Thanks Tim.

Are most Shan Xi tapes the same? Can you recommend some that have similar forms/animals/5 elements to what you've seen from Mao Ming Chun and other Li Gui Chang's students?

By Tim on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 01:41 am: Edit Post

Actually, I've never seen any commercial tapes on Shanxi Xingyiquan.

Maybe others can comment.
